The Whale Sharks Are Arriving in Mexico!

The largest of the fish species, the whale sharks of the Caribbean are beginning to arrive from their annual migration to the waters just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Each year, these mammoth sharks migrate from tropical waters around the world to certain feeding spots of which Mexico’s Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox are two favorites.

Although these giants of the fish kingdom can grow to be over 40 feet in length, they mainly feed on plankton and pose no threat to humans, which makes swimming with whale sharks in their natural habitat a must-do for every true adventurer’s bucket list.

Thousands of whale sharks migrate to Mexico each year, the season starts May 15 and goes through September 15. Their distinctive patterns of pale-yellow spots and stripes make them a truly beautiful sight. Why Cinco de Mayo is Significant for the US

The Battle of Puebla on Cinco de Mayo

In 2010, I wrote a post about Cinco de Mayo which caused some controversy in our office as the post, admittedly, downplays the significance of the battle (and Mexican victory) that took place in Puebla on May 5th, 1862.

At the time I was writing that post, most of the research I did showed that the holiday of Cinco de Mayo was largely accepted as an excuse for Americans to sell more beer. This year, however, I read some interesting articles that have led me to conclude that Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla (in which a 4000 troop Mexican army was able to fend off a French army of 8000 men of, arguably, the most well trained army in the world at the time) was much more significant that most people realize, especially for Americans.

Fist, let me acknowledge that, yes, the Mexican forces in Puebla fought valiantly and skillful to mow down a much larger opponent. The victory was inspiring and helped unite the Mexican people in their cause. But, yes, it is also true that the French ultimately regrouped, overtook Puebla, marched on to overtake Mexico City, and installed Maximilian I as emperor who reigned over Mexico for three years. What is not often mentioned, however, is that it took almost two years for the French to regroup and conquer. The events of those 23 months, or more importantly the events that did not happen during those 23 months, are what make the Mexican victory on Cinco de Mayo so important.

To fully understand the significance of the victory, we must broaden our scope a bit and understand that at the time of The Battle of Puebla, the United States was tearing itself apart in the American Civil War.  It is widely believed that the French were very interested in breaking up the American Union and intended to use the territory of central/northern Mexico, pending a victory in Puebla, to aid the Southern Confederacy with supplies and ammunition in their fight for independence from the Northern Union.

The Battle of Gettysburg, often considered the turning point of The American Civil War, was fought July 1-3, 1863, just 14 months after the Mexicans of Puebla beat back the French. Had the French won at Puebla, they would have been able to supply the Southern Confederacy with supplies and possibly men in the months leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, possibly providing the Confederacy with enough support to have forced a much different outcome in both Gettysburg and the American Civil War in general.

The Last Moments of Maximilian I

Instead, the French were forced to focus all of their energy into regrouping and fighting their way to Mexico City while the battle weary Confederacy was defeated in Gettysburg and eventually defeated outright. While France was eventually able to insert Maximilian I as emperor, they missed their window to aid in the weakening of the American Union as the Northern Union defeated the South, paving the way for The United States of America to become a top world power.

When the American Civil War ended, the United States began supplying the Mexicans with weapons and ammunition, aiding them in their fight to rid Mexico of the new foreign regime. Two years later, Mexicans overthrew and, despite pleas from royalty across Europe, executed Maximilian I, liberating themselves from foreign rule and sending a clear message that Mexico would never again tolerate any government imposed by foreign powers. No European power has ever invaded Mexico nor The United States since.

So when Cinco de Mayo roles around again next year, celebrate twice as hard knowing that the events of that day 150 years ago in Puebla, Mexico played a significant role in the shaping of America. Viva México!

The True Meaning of Ecotourism – Helping the Tarahumaras Combat Food Shortages in the Copper Canyon

Ecotourism is more than just a popular travel trend that involves roughing it in rudimentary accommodations with only the most basic amenities. The true beauty behind this travel option is that it provides you with the opportunity to help the local people improve their everyday lives. At Journey Mexico, one of our favorite causes is in beautiful Copper Canyon.

During our visits to this area, the local people have welcomed our staff and our guests with open arms. Now, these friendly communities are in need of our help. If you’d like to know more about the cause, here’s a little more information about this worthy project in which we participated in:

The Incredible Strength of the Tarahumara People

This region of Mexico is inhabited by native Indians called the Raramuris. This tribe is famous for being able to run for up to 60 miles through this mountainous region without rest and with little to protect their feet but a pair of sandals. In many cases, they make this arduous journey barefoot. Needless to say, this strong group of native Mexicans has become an inspiration to runners around the world and a symbol of strength and endurance to many others.

 

The Great Drought in the Sierra Tarahumara

Since just before the end of 2011, this area has been caught in the most severe drought of the past 70 years. This extreme dryness has caused their lakes to dry up and their crops to whither on the vine. In many case, these brave natives are suffering because they don’t have access to what most of us take for granted: adequate food and clean water.

The Mexican government declared a state of emergency across 37 different regions in Tarahumara on January 3, 2012. These officials believe that the current situation will get much worse before it improves. As a result, these communities will endure another year without enough food, water or fertile soil.

 

The Journey Mexico Initiative

To help these friendly people who have always welcomed our staff and our guests, Journey Mexico created an initiative to raise money to purchase supplies for seven remote villages affected by the drought. Many past guests of Journey Mexico that had hiked the area also donated funds for the cause. The funds were used to purchase and deliver food supplies and other necessities including potatoes, flour, beans, salt, sugar, coffee, powdered milk and water.

 

The American School Run-a-Thon

Once the news of the plight of the Sierra Tarahumara Villages reached the American School located in Puerto Vallarta, the Student Council decided to hold a Run-a-thon to raise additional money to help this worthy cause. On March 2, students from the pre-Kindergarten level through sixth grade ran in this race to raise money for the drought-stricken villages in Copper Canyon. This is a perfect example of how anyone can make a difference in the world through commitment and determination.

The All-Important Deliveries

In addition to raising the money to buy these much-needed supplies, the staff at Journey Mexico volunteered to spend their time procuring these necessities and transporting them to the remote villages. In some cases, traditional transportation couldn’t be used to reach these communities, and items had to be hiked in.

 

So far, food has been distributed to the communities of Mohotavo, Bajichi, Oteviachi, San Alonso and to other areas near these villages. In total, about 460 people benefited from the supplies we were able to procure, transport and distribute.

 

If you were able to contribute to help the native people of Copper Canyon, the team at Journey Mexico wishes to convey their deepest gratitude! We only wish that we had the right words to describe the sincere appreciation that the Raramuris have shown over the last few days.

Although it’s always an honor to achieve this level of recognition, this year is truly special. For 2012, National Geographic Traveler chose “transformation” as the overall theme in addition to evaluating each tour based on authenticity, sustainability, and degree of immersion. The Journey Begins The Chiapas tour is designed to give you an intimate look at Southwest Mexico and the Mayan World. Your journey will begin in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, where your tour leader will welcome you at the Tuxtla Gutierrez airport. Next, you will travel through the Sumidero Canyon before ascending into the highest reaches of the Sierra Madre Sur to reach the quaint colonial city that serves as the commercial center of the highland people of Txotzil and Tzetzal. Within this part of Mexico, the proud farmers still live their lives according to ancient cultural traditions. You’ll have ample opportunity to see this up close as your group explores the area surrounding San Cristobal on foot and interacts with the locals. During your stay, you’ll visit the workshops of local artisans, view the colonial architecture and explore the San Cristobal museums.

The Adventure Continues After you fully explore the highland areas, your group will descend to the exotic Chiapan rainforests where you will enjoy a day filled with swimming, hiking and waterfall exploration. New Volaris Flight Will Connect Cancun to León

Volaris Airlines announced the launch of new routes within Mexico, one which will connect Cancun with the Colonial region of Mexico through the airport in León, Guanajuato. The new route will run two times a week and they will be using Airbus A319 and A320 planes with capacities for 144 and 177 passengers, respectively.

The first connection between León-Cancún started March 29 with two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays. Jesus Almaguer Salazar, the Cancun Director of the Visitors and Conventions Office considered that both flights would allow the influx of tourism to the Bajío region just in time for spring vacations, which opens the door to  potential markets to and from the Mexican-Caribbean and until now was only catered by Magicharters.

In an interview, Salazar highlighted that the tourism from these cities and neighboring states had to travel through Mexico City or Guadalaraja to get to Cancun,  and the new flight routes will produce a reduction in traveling costs that will translate into a larger spending by these tourists  in the areas they are visiting.

Other new routes from Volaris include: Mexico City to Puerto Vallarta, Cancun to Aguascalientes, Guadalajara to Puebla and  Guadalajara to Los Mochis.

Journey Mexico is on a mission to help the native people of Copper Canyon! After a season of severe drought, the Rarámuri or Tarahumara Indigenous are suffering water shortages, food shortages and are in great need of our help. Journey Mexico is getting involved by delivering much-needed supplies to seven communities located on our hiking tours. We hope to raise $500 USD or more per village. During the weekend of March 15th Journey Mexico staffer Karina Huet plans to travel to Copper Canyon to purchase the items and either hike, mule or drive the goods into the following villages:

• Huetosachi
• Mogotavo
• Otéviachi
• San Alonso
• Arecaina
• Wakajípare
• Guitayvo

We’re depending on our staff, our clients and a partnership with the local American School to raise the funds necessary to help this worthy cause. To participate, you can give a direct monetary donation or sponsor one of the primary-school kids in the jog-a-thon as these thoughtful children “run for the running people!” If everything works out as planned, we hope to keep this campaign going with additional drops mid-summer and early fall.

Travel Fair 2012 – Largest in Mexico to be held in Puerto Vallarta in March

Puerto Vallarta Travel FairPuerto Vallarta is pulling out all the stops for the 37th annual Tourism Tianguis Mexico travel fair 2012 that is being held in the Puerto Vallarta Convention Center from March 25th through March 28th of 2012. Every year, this event is held to find new ways to strengthen tourism in Mexico.

According to the director of this exciting event, Miguel González González, this year’s travel fair will focus on Mexico’s core attractions including beach destinations, adventure tourism, luxury resorts and business travel. If you’re attending Tianguis 2012, you will also be presented with a wide range of hands-on activities that will make this event the most successful Mexican travel fair to date. To keep everyone organized and make sure they don’t miss a thing, this year’s Tourism Tianguis is going hi-tech. Participants will have access to an interactive website, a new appointment system, streaming information to their mobile devices and a number of other organizational and Tourism Tianguis Puerto Vallartacommunication tools.

This year’s event is already demonstrating a heightened level of interest in Mexican tourism. Here are a few numbers that illustrate this increase year over year:

  • Buyer participation has increased by 50 percent.
  • Business appointments have increased by 25 percent.
  • The number of registered countries has increased by 30 percent.
  • This year’s venue offers 67 percent more space.

So far, the Mexican government has invested 65 million pesos to this event, but they expect the payoff to local businesses to approach 118 million pesos. Part of this effort includes the new Malecon, improved access roads and a restored historic center. With this preparation, Puerto Vallarta is positioned to impress both the travel industry and visiting tourists.
