The Monarch Butterfly Migration: Amazing Nature Travel to Mexico

For several weeks each year, the oyamel fir trees of Michoacan, Mexico, are transformed into a breathtaking backdrop for one of the most amazing natural phenomena in the world. As late October nears, millions of monarch butterfies suddenly descend upon the branches of Mexico’s spectacular forest reserve to rest amongst the evergreen needles.

To nearby observers, the forest appears to be enveloped by the gentle flitting of delicate reddish orange wings lined with black veins and white speckles. These majestic travelers are Monarch butterflies, an insect colony that must progress through a cycle of multiple generations of offspring before reaching its winter destination along the Mexican coast.

Migration of the Monarch Butterflies Trip

The arrival of the Monarch butterfly is a celebrated event for both locals and foreign visitors who are eager to witness the final stretch of a 5000-mile journey from North America. Journey Mexico welcomes travelers to share in this unforgettable moment with an exciting trip that takes you along the trails of the El Rosario reserve, an enchanting Monarch butterfly sanctuary where these beautiful creatures hibernate and lay thousands of eggs upon special milkweed leaves.

Led by an expert guide, you will travel into a towering grove of fir trees for an up-close look at the Monarch butterflies in their winter habitat. Our highly knowledgeable guides explain the unique cycle of migration Monarch butterflies undergo every year to ensure their survival, a journey that requires several generations of Monarchs to complete. The first three generations of Monarchs travel only a portion of the distance northward, eventually laying the eggs that will form a new colony just before they die out.

On this enlightening trip, visitors experience the final stages of migration as the fourth generation settles in the hibernation grounds. The temperate climate of Michoacan offers safety from moisture and cold, cover from predators and plentiful growth of milkweed. Fourth generation Monarchs, known as the Methuselah generation, have an extended life cycle up to seven or eight months, allowing them to make the journey south from late summer to early autumn and emerge for the mating process as spring arrives.

Enjoy the Natural Treasures of Michoacan, Mexico

The Monarch barely weighs one gram, and yet, its role as a pollinator has a profound effect on the eco-system. Your time amongst the Monarchs continues with a visit to another major sanctuary ground, the Sierra Chincua Reserve. Surrounded by clusters of exquisite Monarch butterflies, visitors get a firsthand glimpse at the epic life cycle of this insect civilization. Yet, no JourneyMexico excursion is complete without adventuring into the surrounding towns and municipalities.

The Michoacan region boasts a magnificent natural landscape, as well as astonishing historical landmarks. Travelers are sure to be captivated by the charming countryside, lush green valleys and sparkling lakes of the Patzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, Ihuatzio and Cucuchuco areas. These towns still stand as thriving cultural centers where visitors can admire the fascinating crafts of skilled artisans and experience the magic of festivals that have been celebrated for generations. Close by are the archeological sites of ancient city squares that preserve a living history of Michoacan.

From the beautifully gripping drama of nature to the monuments of an evolving civilization, this once-in-a-lifetime trip offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself deep in the culture and splendor of Mexico.

Adventure Travel in Mexico

Journey Mexico recently traveled to Veracruz for Mexico’s first adventure trade show, ATMEX, where participants not only learned about Mexico’s adventure offerings, but also about the importance of sustainable tourism. Speaking on the subject was Shannon Stowell, President of Adventue Travel Trade Association (ATTA): “Green, sustainable, and eco travel are still on the rise. Adventure travel is at the forefront.”

Now more than ever, travelers are searching for more than just the cookie-cutter getaways. Adventure tourism has grown approximately 16% in comparison to general travel at 4%. Travelers are done with the flop and drop beach resorts and are ready to experience and explore the destinations they travel. They want to return home with amazing stories and lifetime memories.

Mexico has great potential to develop and cater to this segment of travelers as it is one of the five countries with the widest range of biodiversity in the world. Whether you are looking to take to the land, the air, or the sea, Mexico offers adventure travel opportunities to suit all interests and skill levels. There are also a wide array of eco-friendly lodging options to help off-set your carbon footprint! Below is an overview of some of Mexico’s most exciting adventures and green lodging:

River Rafting and Kayaking – The Gulf Coast state of Veracruz contains more than 40 rivers that wind through rugged topography, offering world-class white water rafting and kayaking experiences. Mexico Verde, provides plenty of these adventurous activities and even has their very own lodging– or better called, ‘glamping’ (glamour camping) –with luxury tents each with private bathrooms.

On the other side of Mexico, between Baja California and the Pacific Coast, lie tranquil and scenic kayaking experiences on the Sea of Cortez, which Jacques Cousteau called “The World’s Aquarium.”

Mountain Biking – The cycling and mountain biking opportunities in Mexico are limitless. The wildly varying climates and geography of Mexico ranging from arid deserts, lush tropical jungles, temperate plateaus, and lofty mountainous and volcanic regions provide breathtaking backdrops for all types of biking adventures.

A great place to explore on bike is the Copper Canyon region– here you will find adrenaline pumping downhill missions and scenic tours through mountain trails. The Sierra Lodge is a great option to stay at when looking to choose an eco-friendly hotel. Here, there is no electricity, no telephones, no TV’s, no radios — but there is hot water and beautiful spacious rooms!

Snorkel and SCUBA – Bordered by four oceans, Mexico is home to some of the finest snorkeling and SCUBA diving opportunities in world.

Legendary snorkel and scuba areas in Cancun now offer underwater sculpture parks http://bit.ly/djyF09 where you can literally watch new ecosystems flourish, and Mexico’s Pacific coast is littered with secluded, lesser known underwater paradises perfect for day trip exploration.

Swimming with Sharks – Thousands of whale sharks (the world’s largest fish) migrate to an island off the coast of Cancun annually, allowing for incredible opportunities to swim with these docile giants that can grow to over 60 feet in length!

Xaloc Resort, located at the prime migrating area for the whale sharks at Isla Holbox , is an eco-friendly getaway composed of bungalows that have been constructed with care. The owners of Xaloc Resort have paid careful attention to all the small details that make an eco-friendly getaway a truly remarkable experience.

For the extremely adventurous, a to the Guadalupe Island, 150 miles off the coast of Baja, California, will have you swimming in crystal clear waters to photograph enormous great white sharks.

Mountaineering and Hiking – Enormous mountains, snow-capped glaciers, and towering volcanoes make Mexico a world-class destination for serious mountain climbers. Mexico’s Copper Canyon, Oaxaca’s Sierra de la Laguna, and the Sierra Madre Sur of Chiapas all offer a range of hiking experiences from cultural jaunts through the countryside to back-country wilderness treks – perfect for all levels of hikers.

Escudo Jaguar Hotel is located on the Usamacinta River in the state of Chiapas. This  eco-tourist resort/camping is operated by a group of native people called the Choles. The owners have worked hard to ensure that guests enjoy the enchanted land surrounding the Usamacinta in a fashion that is eco-friendly and beneficial to the local economy.

Ziplining – Flying through the jungle across lakes and over rivers on a zipline is one of Mexico’s most exciting adventure activities. With world-class canopy courses set up in several regions of Mexico, a day trip of ziplines is a great way to add excitement to a Mexico vacation.

Puerto Vallarta is a prime spot for zipling. Offering various courses through the Sierra Madre Mountains, guests zip tree to tree with a background of the most beauitful views. Nearby Puerto Vallarta you can find Xinalani Retreat a serene resort is surrounded by both the Pacific Ocean and a lush jungle. Composed entirely of high-class suites, it is designed for guests to be close to nature without sacrificing the conveniences of modern living.

Surfing – The fact that Mexico is one of the world’s greatest surfing destinations is indisputable. Whether you are a beginner looking to practice on some long, mellow waves of the Riviera Nayarit or a ripper looking to hide out in the barrels of Baja and the mainland, Mexico has waves for people of all ages and abilities.

Cabo Surf Hotel, is a great option whensurfing the beaches in Los Cabos. Located on  the best surfing beach in the area, Cabo Surf Hotel takes very seriously the consequences that result from damage to the environment and climate change on our planet.

Speaking at International Luxury Travel Market Americas 2012

After a very successful launch event for International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) Americas last year, it has come time for another installment. By invitation-only, travel and hospitality professionals will head south to Mayakoba, a secluded area scattered with luxury resort on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. From October 1st through the 3rd, this group will attend educational sessions, meet with vendors and discuss current and forecasted trends in the industry.

While only leading professionals who specialize in the luxury travel market in North and Latin America are allowed to attend, it really benefits visitors to this region the most. Selective attendees means that no one is distracted by attendees who have nothing to contribute and they can concentrate on the issues at hand. With only three days to spend on these important topics, there’s really no time to waste. It might not happen overnight, but you can expect to see improvements in every area over the next few years as a result of this conference.

Journey Mexico Will Be There
You can bet that Journey Mexico will participate in ILTM Americas, and better yet, President of the company, Zach Rabinor, has been asked to speak as a key industry figure. He will be on a panel moderated by Peter Greenberg, discussing the topic ‘The three most misused words in travel – Ecotourism, Volunteerism and Sustainability’. The session is scheduled on opening day of the conference (4pm on October 1) — details here.

Before the conference, Journey Mexico will be hosting a pre-FAM trip. Join Matteo September 28-30 as he showcases Journey Yucatan (Journey Mexico Cancun) covering the Riviera Maya with:
– stays in Banyan Tree & Hotel Esencia
– an exclusive 1 day air expedition to Chichen Itza Archaeological site
– once in a lifetime off hours visit to Tulum Archaeological site for sun rise
– site inspections of the some of the finest Hotels, Resorts, and Villas in the Riviera Maya

Spaces are available but limited. Click here for the full itinerary.  For more information, please contact Matteo.

If you’re attending the ITLM Americas summit, we’ll see you there! For everyone else, check back for more information about what we accomplished during this industry conference. We’re sure we’ll have some exciting news to share.

Festival Internacional Cervantino 2012: The Top International Cultural Event in Mexico is Approaching!

Travelers who love soaking in high culture in warm climates will be rewarded by traveling to Guanajuato, Mexico, for the annual Festival Internacional Cervantino, the top international cultural event in Mexico. This year’s Festival, which runs from October 3 to 21, promises to deliver art, theater, music and dance delights to travelers with discriminating tastes. More than 155 performances will be held during the three-week festival.

The Festival Internacional Cervantino was first produced in 1972. Organizer Enrique Rueles had been hosting an annual event called Entremeses de Miguel de Cervantes Saaevedra, which celebrated short plays by the author of “Don Quixote.” Recognizing the promise of expanding the festival to include other types of performances, Rueles founded the Coloquio Cervantino in 1972.

In that same year, Mexican President Luis Echeverría Alvarez declared his support for an international festival of culture. Though he had originally intended the festival to be held in Cancun, President Alvarez quickly recognized the benefits of building on the annual Entremeses tradition in Guanajuato. This charming, colonial-era city is home to the more than 49 theaters and venues that hold Festival Internacional Cervantino events every year.

Throughout the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, performers from around the world were invited to show off their dance, theater, music and arts talents. Visitors flocked to the colonial city to watch a wide variety of shows and to see internationally acclaimed performers in action. In the 2000s, the Festival’s directors decided to establish the tradition of inviting performers from one area of Mexico or world region to attend as special guests. The 2012 Festival honors the countries of Austria, Poland and Switzerland as well as the Mexican state of Sinaloa.

The special guest program has allowed the Festival to create a thematic focus while still hosting acts from around the world. In 2011, artists from 29 different countries descended on Guanajuato for the Festival. Festival organizers have worked hard to ensure that there are serious performance of current plays and artistic works as well as family friendly events.

Travelers who enjoy taking in cultural and artistic events won’t be disappointed by a visit to the Festival Internacional Cervantino. The diverse group of artists invited to the event are a boon for a wide variety of art lovers. The colonial setting of Guanajuato adds an extra touch of mystique to this internationally praised annual festival.

(Note: Flying to Guanajuato might require a stop for most people traveling by air, but there are some departure cities that have direct flights to Guanajuato. In fact, Volaris just announced a direct flight to Guanajuato from Chicago, which we blogged about a few days ago.)

Defending Mexico

The article Mexico Maligned; The Mainstream Media´s Myopia by Terry Denton confronts the issue of the onslaught of negative media coverage of Mexico over the past couple of years.   In the article, Denton presents an alternative view, offers some rational metrics for measuring Mexico’s safety and ends by challenging consumers to base their ultimate decision on travel to Mexico on something other than overwrought media reports.

[Summary Excerpt]:
“I hope I have demonstrated that striking Mexico off your list of vacation destinations based solely on money driven media reports is, dare I say it, illogical, irrational and well ..myopic. The real shame is that you are depriving yourself of one of the most value centered travel experiences available anywhere in the world. Mexico has world-class hotels, incredible dining, exciting activities and rich traditions all tendered to the world by humble masters of unparalleled service.

Unfortunately, this humble blogger doesn’t have a prayer by himself of making the least dint in the news coverage of Mexico. Unbowed and undeterred, however, I shall keep on lending my own voice to many others crying in the wilderness. I shall attend Mexico, I shall defend Mexico, I shall recommend Mexico! My only hope is that your decision, fellow traveler, when it is made, will be based on a basic grasp of geography, a familiarity with a few simple statistics and a confident reliance on the consistent testimony of a legion of travelers to Mexico with irrefutable firsthand knowledge.

Whatever you eventually decide, I will fully respect your decision. But please, and again I say please, don’t let a myopic media’s thirst for mayhem rob you of experiencing one of the world’s great treasures. Take if from one who knows, you will be the poorer for it.”
