Most people come to the Yucatán for the ruins. What they find,is that the culture never stopped living. The Maya have sustained traditions across thousands of years, and at the center of that continuity, generation after generation, are women. ThisInternational Women’s Day, we’rerecognizing the artisans, cooks, farmers, and community leaders whose knowledge connects ancient practice with everyday life across the peninsula today.
Craft and Cooking as a Cultural Continuum
In the pre-Hispanic world, Maya crafts expressed spiritual belief, social status, and community belonging. Textiles like the huipil signaled identity, while ceramics, featherwork, jade jewelry, and carved stone reflected both ritual and political life. Ancient artisans produced everyday objects as well as refined works that moved through vast Mesoamerican trade networks. The hands that have weaved, carved, and sculpted for centuries are the thread between ancestral and contemporary Mexico.
Maya culinary traditions follow a similar path of preservation. Techniques like nixtamalizing corn, grinding maize on the metate, and cooking dishes in the underground pib oven underpin Yucatecan food culture. Just as textiles carry symbolic patterns, food reflects a relationship to the land through ingredients grown in the traditional milpa system. Recipes, seasonal knowledge, and cooking methods are rarely written down. Instead, they are learned through participation in the kitchen and shared during meals gathered round the table.
Women as Keepers and Innovators
A girl learns to weave before she learns to read. Sitting beside her mother at the backstrap loom, she absorbs patterns that carry centuries of meaning: community identity, cosmology, a relationship with the natural world that no classroom could teach. The huipil she eventually makes will say something about who she is and where she comes from.
The kitchen works the same way. Daughters learn to nixtamalize corn, grind masa, and time the underground pib oven not from recipes but from standing close and paying attention. What gets transmitted alongside the food is agricultural knowledge, seasonal memory, and a sense of place that drives Maya communities across generations.
Many of these same women now lead cooperatives and community initiatives, carrying that same authority outward from the home into the economic and cultural future of their villages.
The Challenges of Tradition
Contemporary Maya artisans continue to use backstrap looms, natural dyes, and regional motifs that carry centuries of meaning. Alongside these crafts, culinary traditions remain equally vital, anchoring both cultural identity and daily life.
Yet challenges persist. Many communities face marginalization and limited access to training, digital platforms, and fair market opportunities, which can make it difficult for artisans and food producers alike to share their work more widely. Strengthening inclusive models that prioritize local leadership and long-term sustainability remains key to preserving these cultural practices.
Collective Empowerment in Action
Community remains central to Maya life, and women are often at the forefront. Cooperative structures, from agricultural groups to artisan collectives, enable shared decision-making and local autonomy.
Journey’s Positive Impact Fund supports the Haciendas del Mundo Maya Foundation’s work with Maya communities across the Yucatan Peninsula. Through this partnership, self-led groups develop products ranging from salt and Melipona honey to homeware and fashion, presented under the collaborative brand Taller Maya. By connecting artisans to broader markets, these initiatives promote fair wages while safeguarding cultural knowledge.
Learn with Maya Women on Your Next Trip
Journey travelers have the opportunity to meet these inspiring women through community-led experiences in Maya villages.
Guests might learn traditional cooking techniques, preparing dishes alongside local hosts and tasting specialties such as mucbipollo, a Yucatecan tamale slow-cooked in a pib oven during Hanal Pixan, the Maya Day of the Dead celebration.
In village traspatios (backyard gardens), women cultivate the herbs, fruits, and vegetables that feed their families and communities, offering insight into Maya agronomy and the relationship between land, food, and culture.
Experiences often extend beyond the kitchen and garden to include visits to nearby archaeological sites and cenotes, places central to Maya cosmology, as well as encounters with the sacred Melipona bee, whose prized honey has long been valued for its medicinal qualities.
Enduring Legacy
The legacy of Maya craftsmanship reflects ingenuity grounded in heritage. Despite centuries of upheaval, Maya communities have adapted while preserving a strong sense of identity and cultural continuity. Their ability to evolve while remaining rooted reflects the strength of the women who continue to carry these traditions forward.
For travelers, visiting these communities offers the chance to connect with the women who uplift Maya culture through craft, cuisine, and community leadership. Speak with one of our travel planners to explore how to incorporate Maya cultural exchange in your personalized itinerary.
Travel + Leisure Names All Three Journey Regional Managing Directors to Its 2025 A-List
The recognition spans Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Brazil — a first for the owner-operated luxury travel company
February 13, 2026 — Journey, the owner-operated luxury travel company with operations across Latin America, today announced that Travel + Leisure has named all three of its managing directors to the magazine’s prestigious 2026 A-List, its annual selection of the world’s top travel advisors. Javier Echecopar (Journey Costa Rica), and Mikael Castro (Journey Brazil) join company founder Zachary Rabinor (Journey Mexico) on the list, marking the first time all three of Journey’s regional leaders have earned the designation in a single year.
The T+L A-List is one of the travel industry’s most closely watched recognitions, evaluated through a combination of client feedback, destination expertise, and demonstrated ability to deliver access that goes beyond what money alone can buy. Being named requires a track record of exceptional, often unrepeatable, experiences, the kind Journey has built its reputation on.
“This recognition reflects what we’ve been doing quietly for more than three decades,” said Zachary Rabinor, CEO and founder. “Javier and Mika bring the same depth of relationships and genuine curiosity that Journey was founded on. Seeing all three of us on this list in the same year tells me we’ve built something that scales without losing what makes it worth doing.”
Three Destinations. One Standard of Access.
Zachary Rabinor, Journey Mexico (Specialty: Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Panama)
Rabinor founded Journey Mexico more than 30 years ago and remains one of the most respected voices in luxury Latin American travel. His T+L profile highlights a signature experience in the Sierra Madre’s monarch butterfly reserves — private access to observe the emergence of millions of butterflies alongside a refined picnic, the kind of moment that only decades of local relationships make possible.
Javier Echecopar, Journey Costa Rica (Specialty: Costa Rica and Panama)
Echecopar brings a philosophy grounded in spontaneity and wild beauty. A recent standout trip involved 20 chartered helicopter flights across Costa Rica, landing pads built in remote terrain, a yacht stationed offshore, and chefs and musicians available on demand, every day shaped by the landscape and the travelers’ mood. His approach to Costa Rica and Panama is the same as Journey’s approach overall: relationships first, logistics second.
Mikael Castro, Journey Brazil (Specialty: Brazil)
Based in Rio de Janeiro, Castro draws on his U.S. upbringing and deep knowledge of Brazil’s regions to design trips that go well beyond the expected. A recent highlight: arranging a private penalty shootout with a Brazilian football legend for a soccer-loving family, followed by VIP box seats at Maracanã Stadium in custom jerseys. His work reflects Journey’s broader commitment to local partnerships and conservation.
Recognition in Context
The A-List sweep comes during a strong year for Journey. The company holds B Corp certification across all four of its destination brands and received the 2025 Virtuoso Sustainability Award — recognitions that reflect the same values underlying its travel philosophy: long-term relationships with communities, minimal extractive impact, and experiences designed to benefit everyone involved.
Journey operates across Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Brazil, crafting custom itineraries for discerning travelers seeking access that isn’t available through conventional channels. Its model is relationship-based rather than transactional — a distinction that has defined the company since its founding and that the A-List recognition underscores.

Much more than just a game, football is intrinsic to Mexican culture. The team you support becomes a fact of core identity, like being right or left-handed, or what color your eyes are. It’s not something you choose; it chooses you. Allegiances to local teams up and down the country are inherited, passed down through families, neighborhoods, and cities.
You’ll see the legacy of ‘the beautiful game’ everywhere: colorful jerseys worn day to day, street food stands that become live commentary studios on match days, games unfolding over mezcal and tequila. And on the big wins, celebrations spill into the streets, complete with car horns, cheers, and strangers embracing like long-lost friends.
Mexico’s Estadio Azteca, set to host the 2026 opening match between the home nation and South Africa, has already witnessed some iconic World Cup moments. Pelé raised the trophy here for Brazil to the roar of more than 100,000 fans in 1970. Sixteen years later, Maradona produced one of the most standout performances in football history on the same turf, inArgentina’s 2-1 victory over England. Some of the defining stories of the sport were written on this land, and with the World Cup returning this year, anticipation is building foran electric atmosphere to sweep the country once more.
Ultra-Elevated Access in the Heart of the Action
We’ve curated an exclusive way to experience Mexico City during this cultural moment. At a time when global attention turns to the capital, Journey’s deeply rooted relationships open doors into its most coveted spaces.
The country is expected to welcome more than five million visitors for the tournament, but there’s no need to worry about the traffic that comes with it. Arrive to your hotel suite straight from the airport by private helicopter, the buzz of the cityscape stretching out beneath you. Throughout your stay, soar from one helipad to another, between cultural landmarks, private viewings, and Michelin-starred tables.
Soak in the atmosphere of the crowd at the opening game as you take your place amongst the legends who have come before at Estadio Azteca. Later, retreat from the energy to your executive suite at the Four Seasons, a sanctuary of calm in the heart of it all.
When the city is at its busiest, experience it at its most intimate: after-hours access to the Anthropology Museum, private entry to Chapultepec Castle, ancient Aztec ruins explored alongside your own expert archaeologist. Savor a private dinner at Frida Kahlo’s home, seated where the icon herself once gathered guests.
This high-touch journey puts you at the very heart of CDMX, and at the center of access during the 2026 World Cup.

Mexico’s Frida Kahlo is one of the most recognizable artists in the world. Her art and paintings, daily life, and carefully constructed image offer a powerful lens into both the artist herself and the Mexico that shaped her: anti-colonial, politically charged, and creatively electric. Exploring her world in Mexico, from Frida Kahlo museums like Casa Azul to her life alongside Diego Rivera and the politics that influenced her work, reveals why Frida the artist remains so deeply relevant today.
While Frida held only a couple of solo shows during her lifetime, today the self-taught painter from Coyoacán is a global icon. Her work is celebrated in major museum exhibitions, collected for record prices, and referenced across fashion, film, and popular culture. Designers such as Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier have created Frida-inspired collections, Salma Hayek portrayed her in the 2002 biopic, and Madonna counts with several of her paintings.
More than 70 years after her death, Frida continues to draw crowds. Lines of admirers spill out of Casa Azul, her cobalt-blue home in Mexico City. Nearby, Museo Casa Kahlo, which opened in 2025, explores her early family life, while the Tate Modern’s highly anticipated exhibition in London examines her lasting influence and the making of “Frida Kahlo.”
Here are five influences that shaped the life and art of Frida Kahlo:
THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION
Frida was born into one of the most transformative decades in Mexico’s social and cultural history. The Mexican Revolution was a decade-long struggle from 1910 to 1920 that reshaped the nation’s politics, land ownership, and cultural identity, particularly through the renewed recognition of Indigenous heritage. While the Mexican Independence movement a century earlier secured sovereignty from Spain, the Revolution redefined who Mexico was for and who held power within it.
Aligning herself with the cause, Frida adjusted her birth year and proclaimed herself a “Daughter of the Revolution.” She carried its anti-colonial ideals throughout her life, joining the Mexican Communist Party, sharing political convictions with muralist husband Diego Rivera, and offering refuge to exiled revolutionary Leon Trotsky at Casa Azul. Her paintings, public statements, and even her funeral, where her coffin was draped with a Communist flag, reflect a lifelong commitment to left-wing politics and social justice.
Walking through Mexico City’s historic center, traces of the Revolution appear in everyday ways. Avenida Madero honors one of the movement’s early leaders, while the Monumento a la Revolución houses the remains of figures such as Pancho Villa and Venustiano Carranza. Nearby, Diego Rivera’s murals at the National Palace, Bellas Artes, and Diego Rivera Mural Museum continue to narrate the revolutionary story, celebrating workers, Indigenous communities, and the ideals that reshaped the nation.
PAIN AND THE BODY
Inside Casa Azul’s beautifully preserved rooms, you are drawn into Frida’s creative world while sensing the pain that shaped her radically honest style of painting.
As a child, Frida contracted polio, which left her right leg permanently shorter and eventually led to amputation in her final years. At 18, a catastrophic trolley accident shattered her spine and pelvis, leaving her immobilized in a full-body cast for months. Frida lived in constant dialogue with pain and death, a reality that gives her work its intensity and emotional force.
In her bedroom, visitors can still see the mirror her mother placed beneath the bed’s canopy, allowing Frida to paint self-portraits while lying on her back. This is where she began to hone her craft, using painting as a way to cope with pain, solitude, and confinement.
In the garden, rotating exhibitions of Frida’s clothing and personal objects reveal how she transformed physical limitations into part of her visual identity. Illustrated orthopedic corsets, floor-length skirts, and her prosthetic leg adorned with a red lace-up boot reflect both resilience and self-expression.
FRIDA’S FATHER GUILLERMO
Mexico City’s new Museo Casa Kahlo delves into a lesser-publicized side of Frida: her family life. Once the Kahlo family home, just doors from Casa Azul, the house-museum displays childhood drawings, family photographs, and personal letters that reveal Frida the daughter, sister, and aunt.
Frida was especially close to her father, Guillermo Kahlo, whose influence on her artistic development is often overlooked. A German immigrant, Guillermo built a respected career documenting Mexico’s landscapes, architecture, and interiors in the early 20th century.
At Casa Kahlo, visitors can see the same darkroom where Frida spent hours alongside him, learning photography, image retouching, and how to pose for the camera. This early exposure shaped the deliberate, frontal quality of her self-portraits, later defined by her own visual language, iconic monobrow, and unwavering gaze.
INDIGENOUS PRIDE
Frida Kahlo’s reverence for Indigenous culture was a lifelong devotion shared with Diego Rivera. Through her bold appearance, art, and daily life, she presented herself as she wished to be seen, using symbolism to express identity and pride.
Her choice to wear Tehuana dress appears throughout her photographs and self-portraits. The traditional attire includes embroidered square blouses known as huipiles, long enagua skirts, and braided hair threaded with ribbons and flowers. These garments originate from Zapotec communities in Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where women have long held visible social and economic roles. Through this dress, Frida expressed admiration for a living Indigenous culture and aligned herself with a matriarchal tradition that values women as leaders and providers. Across Mexico today, traditional dress remains a symbol of resilience and continuity, linking past and present.
At Casa Azul, Frida lived surrounded by folk art, ex-votos, crafts, and pre-Hispanic objects. The kitchen, filled with vibrant yellows and blues, reflects Mexican handcraft traditions through pottery, wooden utensils, clay cooking pots, ancient metate grinding stones, and a wood-fueled stove. Together with Diego Rivera, Frida believed Indigenous culture formed the foundation of Mexican identity. Rivera’s passion for ancient Mesoamerican relics culminated in the Museo Anahuacalli in Coyoacán, a temple-like space housing his 50,000-strong collection of relics, and dedicated to Indigenous civilizations.
FRIDA KAHLO’S HUSBAND, DIEGO RIVERA
Diego Rivera’s murals still cover stairwells, corridors, and courtyards across Mexico City’s historic center, depicting themes of revolution, oppression, liberation, and Indigenous visibility.
When Frida first encountered Rivera at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, she was studying medicine and sought his opinion on her paintings as he worked on a mural. Rivera encouraged her to take her art seriously, and through his work, Frida saw how art could carry social meaning and challenge political ideas.
Through Rivera’s networks, Frida entered artistic and intellectual circles in Mexico, the United States, and Europe, immersing herself in post-revolutionary nationalism and Marxist politics that deeply influenced her work. At Casa Azul, the couple hosted legendary dinner parties where artists, writers, Hollywood figures, and revolutionaries gathered to debate late into the night. At Casa Azul, the couple hosted legendary dinner parties that became meetings of minds, where artists, writers, bohemians, Hollywood stars, and revolutionaries feasted, debated, and talked late into the night.
Their marriage was marked by passion, infidelity, and emotional pain, themes that became central to Frida’s work. Rivera was both muse and wound, shaping her art through love, conflict, and shared ideals.

GO BEYOND THE GUIDEBOOK IN POPULAR DESTINATIONS
Travelers are increasingly seeking more than a checklist. They want to feel a place, ask questions, and scratch beneath the surface, trading the role of spectator for something more engaged and meaningful. While iconic destinations and landmarks still inspire, they can often feel scripted, leaving little room for the personal sense of discovery that every traveler deserves.
Journey Mexico bridges that gap through curated experiences shaped by our own constant exploration and the long-lasting relationships we build along the way. These trusted, insider connections with passionate local experts, storytellers, and innovators open doors that are not available to most, giving our guests a richer perspective and a deeper understanding of the places they visit. We invite travelers to explore each destination in context, from a different angle, and as a welcomed guest rather than a visitor passing through.

Templo Mayor: Explore Mexico City’s origins through a private, after-hours visit to the Templo Mayor Museum with archaeologists, uncovering artifacts from the Mexica empire, later known as the Aztecs, and the lake-bound city that once stood beneath today’s Zócalo.
Depiction of the ancient Aztec center, now Mexico City’s Zócalo.
Fifa 2026 World Cup: Mexico will host the opening match of 2026’s Men’s World Cup on June 11 in the capital city’s Estadio Azteca. Mexico’s thirteen World Cup matches will be hosted across three cities, with five in Mexico City, four in Guadalajara and four in Monterrey. Watch this space.
LOCAL HOSTSBRING GUESTS INSIDE TRADITION
There’s a big difference between admiring a finished craft and understanding the dedicated path that shaped it. When guests truly step into the world of local makers and guardians of tradition, they gain a richer appreciation for how deeply each practice is tied to place. These customs, passed down through generations, give a grounding sense of continuity and a feeling of belonging to something larger. Participating in such rituals prompts reflection on our own values and connections, revealing the beauty of a skill refined over centuries and carried forward by countless hands.
Traveling with local hosts invites genuine exchange and a deeper bond with the culture, shaped by the privilege of being welcomed into traditions rather than simply observing them.

This incredible system sustains all life in the area, and the lagoon-like sinkholes are beautiful places to spend time with nature.
Journey Mexico takes guests away from the crowds for the ultimate cenote experience:
Private and personalized with an al fresco lounge
Yucatecan lunch in an otherworldly setting
Swim and snorkel in crystalline waters
Guided dives to discover underwater rock formations

JOURNEY INTO 2026 WITH US
2026 is set to be a dynamic year for travel in Mexico. From nature-rich escapes and cultural immersion to rare access and expert-led exploration, Journey Mexico designs experiences that invite deeper curiosity and genuine connection, with moments that resonate long after the return home.
Pueblo Mágicos (or Magic Towns) are hubs throughout Mexico that are recognized by the government for their ‘magical’ qualities, whether that be their rich cultural history, remarkable nature or local traditions.
Among the more famous Pueblo Mágicos is Tequila – the home of the world-renowned spirit. But, for the most part, these towns are lesser-known gems, waiting to be discovered by explorers looking to for authentic pockets of Mexico.
HOW MANY PUEBLOS MÁGICOS ARE THERE?
Today, 177 towns hold this badge of honor. When the program launched in 2001, there were just three; that number that has grown steadily as more communities are recognized for championing Mexico’s extraordinary cultural and natural heritage.
HOW DOES A PUEBLO BECOME MÁGICO?
To earn the title of Pueblo Mágico, a town must meet a set of stringent criteria to ensure it meets the required high standards. There’s a formal application process, ongoing evaluation, and a commitment to preserving the things that make the place special: its culture, history, landscapes, and traditions. It’s not a label handed out lightly. The designation recognizes communities that protect their heritage while welcoming travelers in a well-managed way, ensuring that the experience you find there is authentic.
We love these spots, because they allow travelers to genuinely connect and experience the real Mexico in all its richness. As our team hails from up and down the country, and spends their days exploring it relentlessly, we asked them which Pueblos Mágicos they love the most.
Here are some of their top picks…
1. CREEL, CHIHUAHUA
Creel is one of northern Mexico’s most striking Magic Towns, known for its epic canyon scenery, pine forests, and strong indigenous heritage (specifically Tarahumara and Rarámuri). Built directly into the mountainside and sitting at the threshold to the Copper Canyon (one of the largest canyon systems in the world), it is visually striking, with a rugged, high-altitude personality.
Best For: Dramatic landscapes, indigenous culture, outdoor exploration.
Why we love it: “Creel is so unique. It’s the gateway to the Copper Canyon, so it’s surrounded by towering cliffs, striking rock formations and traditional Tarahumara villages. It’s home to the Rarámuri indigenous community and feels so culturally rich – the markets, the museums, the day-to-day life. The changing seasons are also captivating: warm, sunny summers, crisp and cozy winters, and even the occasional snowfall, which completely transforms the landscape. It’s a dream for hikers, and one of the highlights of the famous El Chepe train route (the long-distance passenger train). For adventure seekers, the nearby Copper Canyon Adventure Park offers ziplines, the iconic canyon funicular, and breathtaking viewpoints.” – Ismael Pedraza, Destination Development Manager
We love Hotel Mirador to stay in Creel. Surrounded by pine trees and built right into the cliff edge, it has award-winning views over the canyon stretching out below.
2. SAN SEBASTIAN DEL OESTE, JALISCO
San Sebastián del Oeste is a quaint, colonial mining town, characterized by whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and 17th-century architecture. Tucked high into the rolling Sierra Madre mountains, the air is noticeably cooler up here. You can enjoy stunning views out over the lush green landscape, and when the mist rolls through, it gives the place a very atmospheric feel.
Best for: Colonial architecture, coffee culture, mountain scenery.
Why we love it: “I love escaping the summer heat for a weekend in San Sebastian. As you drive up into the mountains, pine forests replace palm trees, and the air turns fresh and cool. There’s something about the atmosphere of the town I find deeply relaxing; it’s like time stops. In the day, you can wander the cobblestone streets with its old architecture and quaint red and white houses, full of clues about San Sebastian’s mining history, or take an ATV up to La Bufa for panoramas of the Sierra Madre, sometimes peeking out from rolling mist. The town square is my favorite for moments with friends – gathering round a steaming taco stall, sipping atole or raicilla in the cold evening air, and enjoying the pueblo’s simple life.” – Sally Wells, Senior Content Editor
3. MAZUNTE, OAXACA
Mazunte is a small, sleepy beach town on the Oaxacan coast, known for its laid-back energy and postcard-worthy views of the Pacific. The Mexican National Turtle Center based here, and in winter, you can often spot humpback whales offshore. Enjoy surf spots nearby, incredible sunset vistas, and plenty of local spots serving Oaxacan cuisine staples for dinner afterwards.
Best for: Coastal wellness, Pacific sunsets, nature and marine life.
Why we love it: “What makes Mazunte so special for me, is the chilled-out vibe of the place. It’s not an overly busy tourist spot, but more of a hidden gem that has kept that feeling of a small, local town. Some of my favorite bits: at Punta Cometa you can find the best sunset on the Oaxacan coast; Playa Mermejita has unusual dark sand and is such a peaceful spot, ideal for disconnecting; and the Mercado Artesanal has some great artisan products and amazing food. It’s the perfect spot for a calm beachy getaway” – Maria Quero, Travel Planner
Speak to our team about the best places to stay in Mazunte! We love La Valise and Cocolia, as peaceful sanctuaries perfect for a coastal escape.
4. ATLIXCO, PUEBLA
Atlixco is a blooming colonial town at the foot of the Popocatépetl volcano, known for its mild climate and long-standing tradition of flower cultivation. Gardens, plazas, and nurseries bring bursts of color to Atlixco, alongside murals and colonial buildings.
Best for: Vibrant traditions, colonial charm, traditional cuisine.
Why we love it: “I had a lovely time when I visited Atlixco with my parents and was surprised at how different it feels from Puebla, even though it’s just a short drive away. What really struck me was how genuine it was: from the people to the food, and the flower-filled streets were full of character. It’s charming in a very down-to-earth way, and the mole here is amazing, that alone is worth the trip!” – Gerardo Tovar, Sales Manager
5. VALLADOLID, YUCATÁN
Set in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula, Valladolid is known for its colorful streets, central cenotes, and easy access to nearby Maya sites (it’s one of the best bases for exploring the region!). The pastel buildings, leafy plazas, and local markets give it a relaxed feel, with a food scene that leans proudly into regional Yucatecan flavors.
Best for: Cultural exploration, archaeological sites, cenote adventures.
Why we love it: “I have visited Valladolid many times – it’s the perfect gateway to Chichén Itzá and Ek’ Balam. The main square with its large church is beautiful, and the traditional coconut ice cream that you can get here is to die for! There are charming, boutique-lined streets to stroll, and cultural gems like the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, which is truly something to behold. Around the convent, a lovely park along with a few small cafes make it the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon. What’s really cool about Valladolid, is that there are several cenotes within the city, so you can make the most of these without having to travel far. A favorite restaurant of mine is Mesón del Marqués – they serve excellent cochinita pibil, and you can see them making tortillas by hand right at the entrance!” – Jose Pineda, Director of Sales
The truth is, all 177 of these spots are special. Here’s a few more of our favorites…
San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas: A cool highland town known for its Indigenous heritage and colorful streets.
Sayulita, Nayarit: A lively surf spot with a bohemian feel and great waves.
Izamal, Yucatán: A colonial gem with deep Maya roots.
Tepoztlán, Morelos: A mystical hub in the mountains known for its pyramid hike and weekend market.
Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí: A remote desert enclave with ghost-town charm and wide-open views.
We could talk about Pueblo Mágicos all day. Those featuring in this blog are some of our most cherished, but there are loads more that we’ve enjoyed exploring. We love how these places continue to honor and celebrate Mexican heritage and set the standards high for the caliber of authentic hubs that guests can visit across Mexico.

Journey, the award-winning luxury travel company specializing in tailor-made experiences across Latin America, is proud to announce that it is now fully certified as a Certified B Corporation™ across all three countries of operation: Mexico, Costa Rica, and Brazil.
Following Journey Mexico’s certification in 2024, both Journey Costa Rica and Journey Brazil achieved certification in 2025, making Journey one of the few luxury travel companies worldwide to hold this distinction across its entire portfolio.
Certified B Corporations™ are verified by the nonprofit B Lab™ to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency, demonstrating that business can truly be a force for good.
“Long before we knew the term B Corp, we were already working toward it in spirit. Seeing that commitment recognized across all our destinations feels incredibly rewarding and reminds us why we do what we do, to make travel a genuine force for good,“ said Zachary Rabinor, Founder and CEO of Journey.
Journey’s certification recognizes a company-wide effort to embed sustainability into every level of operation, from community partnerships and carbon reduction strategies to employee engagement and supplier standards.
“What I love about becoming a B Corp is that it pushes us to educate ourselves, our partners, and our guests. Awareness and training are essential if we want to make real change. Our whole team lights up when we talk about sustainability and the difference we can make together,” said Matteo Luthi, Managing Director of Journey Mexico.
“I remember reading about B Corp many years ago and appreciating how much of a shift it was from the traditional model of shareholder primacy. Becoming a B Corp started as a dream and became a mission, and joining Journey gave me the right environment to make it real. After two years of hard work, I’m bursting with pride that we’ve become the company I dreamt of. Now we’ll keep pushing ourselves to live up to that purpose and be a true force for good through travel,” said Javier Echecopar, Managing Director of Journey Costa Rica.
“We founded Journey Brazil with the clear intention of being a force for good. Becoming B Corp Certified in our first year is a reflection of our team and the meaningful partnerships we have across the country. As we explore deeper in Brazil, we are proud to guide travelers to experiences that have a positive impact on the people and places along our journeys,” said Mika Castro, Managing Director of Journey Brazil.
Journey’s certification marks a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to luxury travel with purpose. The company continues to invest in long-term sustainability initiatives through its Positive Impact Fund, partnerships with community-led conservation projects, and efforts to measure and reduce its operational footprint.
About Journey Journey is a portfolio of luxury destination management specializing in tailor-made travel experiences in Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Panama. Certified as a B Corporation™ across our destinations, Journey designs journeys that connect discerning travelers with people, culture, and nature through luxury travel that makes a positive impact.
Named after the golden Copa de Oro flower that grows wild along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Las Alamandas takes its name, and its spirit, from nature. As owner Isabel Goldsmith-Patiño says, “Las Alamandas is the result of my love for nature.” It’s an affection that’s visible in every corner of this secluded retreat, characterised by tropical gardens, vivid architecture, and ocean views as far as the eye can see.
Far from the polished predictability of larger resort-style properties, Las Alamandas has long drawn travelers in search of something different: a slice of luxury in Mexico that remains very much its own. Romantic, creative, and inherently connected to its surroundings, it’s a truly authentic Mexican hideaway in every sense. While it’s captivating year-round, we love visiting between November and April, when the days are warm, the air is clear, and the coast is at its most inviting.
ARRIVAL ON THE COSTALEGRE
Wind down a rustic stretch of dirt road until the landscape suddenly gives way to lush greenery, a sparkling fountain, and those vibrant pink walls: you’ve arrived, welcome to Las Alamandas. Sitting proudly against the tropical blue sky of Mexico’s unspoiled Costalegre coast, this boutique hideaway is a unique gem, its bold hues and coastal vistas ready for any Instagram grid.
Perhaps arrival with a touch down on their private airstrip is more your style… Either way, set across 2,000 acres of preserved nature, you are greeted by a collision of jungle and coastline in a pop of colour, encased in beautifully curated gardens. The surrounding area remains blissfully untouched: with wild beaches, rugged landscapes, and the soft flow of the ocean to remind you that you’ve truly escaped.
With 8 villas hosting 18 suites, all generously sized and individually designed, Las Alamandas feels refreshingly personal; more like staying in someone’s colorful, character-filled home. Each room bursts with personality and charm, alive with Mexican artistry and warmth. With suites opening to the sound of the waves, it feels as though you’re floating on the ocean itself as you drift off to sleep at night.
THE SPIRIT OF MEXICO IN THE GUEST EXPERIENCE
At its heart, this property is a celebration of Mexico. Every corner reflects the vision of its creator, Isabel Goldsmith-Patiño, from the vibrant architecture to the hand-painted tiles, woven textiles, and carefully selected local art that fill each room. Oozing with character, it feels more like a private Mexican home, and unlike any other resort you may have visited before. You can even find a stack of DVDs beside the television, a charming nod to simpler times, that somehow fits perfectly here.
The meals showcase that same authenticity. Fresh fish caught that morning, hand-pressed tortillas, carne asada (grilled beef) with beans, freshly picked tropical fruit, all served in the way that locals enjoy best. Much of the produce comes from the resort’s organic orchard, and the menus change with what’s freshest – if you’re looking for a relaxed, barefoot style of luxury dining, with a side explosion of flavor and traditional flare, then this is the place for you. Dinner is served at Oasis Restaurant, adorned with candlelit tables under the stars and a tropical tequila and margarita bar which draws on herbs and fruits from the resort’s own gardens. At La Palapa Beach Club, you can dine midday with toes in the sand, Pacific waves just beyond your plate.
Much of the soul defining this property comes from Isabel herself. Still calling this place home, Isabel lives in a house perched up on the hill above the property. She returns from her travels across the country with paintings, sculptures, and textiles that now fill the small on-site boutique gallery, each one a reflection of her deep affection for Mexico.
A CURATED OCEANFRONT LIFESTYLE
Las Alamandas has been welcoming guests for decades, but its appeal remains timeless. This year, the property has refreshed its suites with new touches while still keeping the character that makes it so beloved. A newly opened games room adds a touch of old-school fun, complete with pool and ping-pong tables, and there are now pickleball courts too (a hit with returning guests).
Days here move at a slower pace. Mornings might start with a horseback ride along the sand, followed by a private picnic lunch on a hidden stretch of beach. Guests can try their hand at tennis, basketball, or croquet, or perhaps enjoy a quiet wander along the shore, on the lookout for seasonal humpback whales. Finish your day sipping some delicious cocktails while admiring the sunset melt into the horizon. Ahead of time, Journey Mexico will help curate the perfect itinerary for you, balancing relaxation with immersive activities that allow you to make the most of this spectacular setting.
For families or groups of friends, it’s perfect for a buyout. With its intimate size (only 18 suites) and a whole stretch of the Pacific at your doorstep, it feels like a private villa compound in a fairytale setting. Some suites, like Bougainvillea 2, feature double showers with hot-pink hand-painted tiles for that extra flourish. The festive season is especially magical: no minimum stay from December 19 – 27, and a five-night celebration from December 27 to January 1, complete with mariachis, fireworks, and a Mexican fiesta beneath the stars.
A RARE GEM: FROM THOSE SEEKING SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Las Alamandas is the kind of place we at Journey Mexico love introducing to the types of discerning travelers seeking intimacy over scale, character over convention, and a true sense of place. Distinctive and full of spirit, it offers a unique style of luxury: quietly confident, remote, and unmistakably Mexican.
We love designing journeys around Las Alamandas and think it pairs perfectly with a visit to Mexico City; contrasting the capital’s energetic and vibrant pulse with the stillness of the Pacific coast. It also makes a spectacular long weekend escape or private buyout, where the entire estate becomes your own: gardens, beaches, and staff devoted solely to you and your guests. Evenings bring their own magic, with seaside barbecues, clifftop cocktails, and romantic dinners with the ocean as your backdrop.
For those looking for something beyond the ordinary, Las Alamandas is an experience that captures the heart of the country while maintaining its own unique charm. Every time we return, we’re reminded that places like this are rare: a celebration of the setting, the people, and the spirit of Mexico.
Journey Mexico’s Managing Director, Matteo, and our social media pro, Marysol, recently returned from visiting our good friends at Chablé – a property we love to keep coming back to. What they discovered was something that feels rare in the Yucatán today: a property where luxury doesn’t distance you from the culture, but invites you deeper into it.
Chablé Yucatán is rooted in living Maya traditions, where staff from neighboring villages welcome you as though into their own community. From rituals beside sacred cenotes to meals guided by generations-old practices, everything feels immensely personal and connected to this incredible place and its abundant natural surroundings. It’s a side of the Mexican Caribbean that feels special, and a little different, one very much defined by heritage, authenticity, and a genuine sense of pause from the busy day to day.
At Journey Mexico, these authentic corners of Mexico shape the itineraries we design. Enjoy a stay at Chablé Yucatán as a retreat into nature and wellness, but also a gateway to exploring the region’s cultural treasures. Here’s what we found during our time in this remarkable corner of Mexico, and why we’re so excited to share it with you…
Step Into the Elements
When Matteo and Marysol arrived at Chablé Yucatán, what struck them first wasn’t just the beauty of the grounds – a vast estate where a restored hacienda sits amid jungle and cenotes – but the way the introduction felt so personal. From the very beginning, staff invited them not as tourists, but as guests being welcomed into a philosophy inherently rooted in Mayan tradition. The team carry a genuine pride in sharing their heritage: that warmth is what allows you to exhale, feel instantly at home, and start to let go.
That welcome is expressed in the very first experience every guest has: a harmonization ritual by the cenote, led by Ixelcilcan, the resident wellness expert. Drawing on the four natural elements (air represented by the sweep of a fan, fire by warmth, water by wave-like sounds, and earthy herbs to cleanse away worry) the ceremony is sensory and symbolic. Mayan themes are woven through to carry you into the grounding of the place: from this first moment, you open yourself to the spirit of Chablé. As Marysol put it, “it makes you feel ready for everything that comes your way at the property.”
With just 40 casita-style villas, each with a plunge pool, outdoor shower, and terraces spilling into the greenery, the experience feels like your own private sanctuary. And for those seeking more space – families, groups, or longer stays – the Residences echo the same feeling of immersion on a larger scale.
Those Who Make Chablé Feel Like Home
“The staff are all so proud to be there. They feel like it belongs to them, and this proudness – you feel it. From the front desk to the maids, to the gardeners, everyone is part of that same ambiance, so those values are really reflected” – Matteo Luthi, Managing Director, Journey Mexico
Once invited into Chablé’s world, it is the people who then make you feel truly at home. Around 70% of the staff come from Chocholá (the village just next door, so close that many bike in each day), and their pride is palpable. You can really feel that it’s not just about coming to work, but about sharing their culture; offering the highest level of service built on layers of local tradition.
Chef Doña Lucy, for example, brings that spirit into the kitchen. She greeted Matteo and Marysol with a kitchen full of Yucatecan dishes before sharing stories through the process of hand-grinding cacao and pressing tortillas over the fire. “Doña Lucy pours her heart and soul into everything she does in the kitchen, and all her delicious meals” Marysol tells us. Using ingredients from the orchards and gardens on the property grounds, you won’t find these precise combinations anywhere else. In the wellness spaces, experts guided them into deeper reflection. Sessions inspired by the four natural elements and enriched with Maya wisdom encourage you to slow down, open up, and maybe even see things from a different perspective – turning a spa visit into something restorative and meaningful.
And then there was Kevin, the onsite mixologist, who turned the art of cocktails into memory. He called upon nostalgic scents from their childhoods – for Marysol, the sweet vanilla of her mother’s baking – and transformed them into a personalized cocktail, complete with a recipe to carry home.
Where Nature Leads the Way
Nature is a living part of the experience. Deer wander freely across the estate (some rescued and rewilded), their quiet presence adding to the sense of peace. Iguanas bask on sunlit stones, birds call at dawn, and a morning mist settles softly over the jungle. Guests are encouraged to rise early to feel the forest awaken, a time of day that carries a raw energy, that makes you want to slip off your shoes and walk barefoot on the earth.
This connection runs deeper than atmosphere. In Maya tradition, nature has always been sacred: permeating agriculture, ceremony, gastronomy, and daily life. Chablé honors that heritage in countless ways, from the gardens where herbs and vegetables are grown for use in Doña Lucy’s cooking, to the Meliponarium, home to the stingless Melipona bees. Considered sacred by the Maya, their honey is still gathered with ceremony and is prized for its healing properties – join workshops to discover its uses, from medicinal honey to beeswax products.
Even something as simple as wandering the green pathways within the grounds becomes a moment of immersion, surrounded by chirping birds and endless shades of green. Nature here is part of the experience, and an inherent reminder of our place within it.
Unveiling the Yucatán
A stay at Chablé Yucatán becomes truly transformative when paired with the wider spirit of the region, which is where Journey Mexico loves to get creative. The team’s visit underlined how this property feels like a world of its own, yet just beyond its boundaries lies a wealth of cultural treasures waiting to be explored.
We’ll arrange private journeys to Celestún, where flamingos paint the lagoons pink, or into Mérida, where colonial avenues hum with history and life. In rural communities, join families to harvest vegetables, grind corn, and prepare a traditional cochinita pibil (succulent, slow-roasted pork) in a subterranean oven – a chance to cook and connect in the way the Maya have for generations. And of course, no stay in the Yucatán is complete without epic archaeological sites. With our expert local guides, uncover ancient cities in context and depth – from the famed Chichén Itzá’s magnificent step pyramid and ball court, to the quieter Uxmal’s richly decorated façades and intricate latticework tucked into dry tropical forest. Afterwards, plunge into refreshing crystalline waters at a nearby cenote, another of the Yucatán’s wonders.
Through experiences like these, Journey Mexico turns a stay at Chablé into something all-encompassing, through experiencing the wider culture, heritage, and hidden gems.
Chablé Maroma: Pairing the Pause
After days immersed in the stillness of the Yucatán jungle, the natural balance is to follow with time by the sea. Chablé Maromaoffers that perfect complement – a stretch of the Riviera Maya that feels worlds away from the bustle. Here, a 650-foot private beach stretches across 758 acres of turquoise ocean, far removed from the high-rises and crowded resorts further north. What you find instead is authentic Mexico: quiet paths shaded by jungle, waves breaking against untouched sand, and a slow pace to really soak it all in.
Seventy villas, crafted from stone and wood, are scattered between beach and greenery, each one designed to blend into the natural surroundings. Private terraces, plunge pools, and sea breezes drifting through tall windows create spaces that feel serene and grounded. The spa continues the Chablé philosophy of mind, body, and soul, only here the ocean itself becomes the energy source – dynamic, ever-changing, and deeply restorative. Cuisine is another highlight. At Restaurante Bu’ul, led by two celebrated chefs, the menu spotlights the depth of Mexican gastronomy while embracing the fresh coastal flavors of the Riviera Maya. Whether it’s an à la carte dish overlooking the Caribbean or a six-course tasting paired with fine wines, dining here is both a tribute to tradition and a curious exploration of the new.
And while the coast’s beauty is at your doorstep, you’re also perfectly placed to explore: the ancient temples, hidden cenotes, and vibrant marine life are all close by. At Maroma, you gain the richness of the Riviera Maya without sacrificing the peace and connection you discovered at Chablé Yucatán.
If you’d like to experience this incredible side of Mexico, our team would love to design a journey just for you, blending Chablé’s spirit with the cultural treasures of the Yucatán. With trusted relationships on the ground, we unlock special access and deeper connection, while our expertise ensures seamless delivery. Every itinerary is tailored – from Maya crafts to wildlife, wellness, or hacienda history – always rooted in respect for the communities who make it possible. Baja might just be Mexico’s most underrated destination right now – a wild, sprawling peninsula to the west of the country that takes over 24 hours to drive from top to bottom. Our Director of Sales, José Pineda, and Product Development Manager, Karina Espinoza Huet, just got back from some boots on the ground relentless exploration; crisscrossing deserts, coasts, and towns, and building relationships with people who know this extraordinary part of Mexico most intimately. We’ve crafted our dream itinerary – one that unlocks the real Baja, beyond Los Cabos, and how best to experience it: the hidden pockets, the life-changing wildlife encounters, and the cultural gems you’d never stumble upon alone. Here’s five reasons why Baja should be next on your list.
1. The Unique Landscapes: Are We Still on Earth, or Somewhere Else Entirely?
At Journey Mexico, we love to explore deeper. Few places embody this spirit more than Baja: a fascinating world of contrasts, not quite like anywhere else in Mexico, and not quite like anywhere else on Earth for that matter. It is a rare meeting point of desert, ocean, biodiversity, and cultural frontiers, offering raw wilderness and a spirit all its own that you can’t quite put your finger on. Geographically isolated, the peninsula juts out into the Pacific, with one coastline facing the open ocean and the other cradling the life-rich Sea of Cortez. This dual geography breeds extremes: rugged mountains and cactus-studded deserts sliding down into turquoise bays, marine sanctuaries teeming with whales, dolphins, and sea lions. The result is a place that feels remote and untamed, where vast landscapes at times “feel like Mars,” as José puts it. More than just an end-of-the-world energy, it feels entirely otherworldly, with long stretches of empty beaches, dirt tracks leading to secret surf breaks, and night skies painted with a million stars. Our passion is to bring guests to places that feel raw and untouched yet deliver them with seamless comfort. Out here, life follows its own rhythm, with a distinct cultural identity rooted in the natural world – fishermen haul in the day’s catch, families and friends gather over local dishes cooked with heart, and vaqueros, or cowboys, still ride across the plains, kicking up clouds of dust as they travel with their mules.
2. Nature in Full Force: Come Face to Face with Majestic Whales
Those same extremes that characterize Baja’s landscape are also what make it such a vibrant hub of biodiversity; with extraordinary opportunities for encounters that will take your breath away. While Baja’s wildness offers many wonders, it is perhaps most revered for its whales: each year, around 20,000 gray whales make the journey from the Arctic to Baja’s lagoons, making this one of the best spots on the planet for observing the gentle giants. Feel this migration vividly at San Ignacio, where glamping comes with a Journey twist – luxury tents set right on the water’s edge, complete with plush double beds, cozy lounge areas, and thoughtful details like patterned rugs and chandeliers that bring hotel-style comfort into the wild. Enjoy days spent out on the water meeting these astonishingly social creatures, and nights unfolding under pristine, star-filled skies, sharing family-style meals that turn strangers into friends. Over in the sheltered bay of La Paz, revel in the rare chance to swim and snorkel alongside the world’s largest fish – the whale shark – guided by local experts whose lifelong connection to these waters makes the experience even more meaningful.
“It’s not just about luxury – it’s special because it’s authentic. Not just the magnificent whales, but the people, the guides, the shared moments. Everything about it feels rare and meaningful.” – José Pineda, Director of Sales, Journey Mexico
At Journey Mexico, we believe there’s something truly special about experiencing a place through its nature. These momentary encounters – watching a gray whale nudge her calf beside your boat, or swimming eye-to-eye with a whale shark – connect you to millions of years of evolution, yet in your very own once-in-a-lifetime moment. It inspires awe and joy in equal measure, but, we think, also stirs something deeper: a sense of responsibility to protect these extraordinary places for the future.
3. Experiences Rooted in Place: Generations of Tradition
Baja is also about the people whose lives and traditions are deeply woven into the land – and sea. Connection runs deep: in the vineyards, in the fishing villages, and in kitchens where recipes are rich with generations of memory. In the Valle de Guadalupe (Mexico’s wine country tucked away in the mountains), it’s absolutely the bottles that make the region special, but just as much as the people behind them. Share a glass of wine with the eccentric and quick-witted owners of winery Clos de Tres Cantos, and in Santo Tomás, enjoy unique grape varieties you won’t find elsewhere, with small batches reserved only for local consumption. “Rather than chasing international awards, here it’s about savoring a glass in the place it was created” explains Karina; it’s about drinking in the traditions and passion of those who make it.
Taking to the seas at Ensenada’s Campo 7, step aboard a rustic vessel helmed by local fishermen. As stories flow in an authentic Spanglish mix, set sail in search of fish with an unpolished charm that offers a true glimpse into their way of life. The reward, aside from cooking and sharing your catch of the day (just as Baja’s communities have always done), is also the rare chance to connect with authentic fishermen in this local spot. Beyond the fishing boats, Baja’s food culture is thriving on land too, with a culinary scene that balances world-class flavor with generational roots. Take Doña Esthela’s beloved roadside spot back in the wine-rich Valle de Guadalupe: what began in 2008 as her humble burritos for local vineyard workers has grown into one of the most famous restaurants in the region, now proudly carrying a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. The charm here is in its hearty, soulful cooking and generous spirit: fluffy corn hotcakes, gorditas stuffed with peppers and Mexican cactus, or the signature borrego tatemado – a slow-cooked lamb dish drawing visitors back time and again. With heavy wooden tables and boisterous crowds, it embodies the care and generosity characteristic of Baja’s gastronomy; and if the lines out of the door weren’t proof enough, visits from the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay surely should be.
Building relationships with the people behind the places is in the Journey DNA. Over decades of exploring every corner of the country, we’ve forged connections that open doors to the most authentic experiences – those you don’t simply stumble upon, but are invited into. It’s this access that really ensures our travelers feel like special guests in Baja, rather than tourists – truly welcomed into its living traditions.
4. Raw Energy: Tijuana’s Cultural Frontier
Tijuana is a border town stepping boldly into a new era, and we see it as one of the most exciting cultural frontiers in the country. Once overlooked, it’s now reimagining itself with a raw, lived-in energy – “not necessarily polished or pretty, but rustic, authentic, and full of life” José tells us. This is a city where knowing where to go (and when) makes all the difference, and that’s exactly the kind of discovery we love to unlock for our guests. The culinary scene is the perfect example. Tacos and food trucks set the tone, but layered on top are specialty coffee roasters, bakeries, and concept-driven eateries, each carrying its own personality. One of our favorite spots to take travelers is La Telefonica – a cultural park where food stalls, craft breweries, and DJs create an atmosphere that’s vibrant, youthful, and distinctly Tijuanense. Over in the Colonia Cacho neighborhood, we’ve uncovered modern cafés and pastry spots that embody the city’s reinvention, places you might not find without the insider guidance.
This is how we love to get to know a place: exploring like a local, understanding what makes it tick, identifying the essentials to dip into – the ones that reveal Tijuana’s essence beneath the surface. It’s no wonder Anthony Bourdain stopped by here too, to spotlight its food scene, and today, the energy he sensed has only grown. We delight in sharing it with travelers who want to really experience the city.
5. La Paz: Mexico’s Best-Kept Secret
Further down on the southern tip of the peninsula, there’s a feeling that you’ve stumbled upon something undiscovered in the region’s capital La Paz – a city alive with local energy yet still distinctly under the radar. There’s a sense that you’ve arrived just before it all “blows up”, when the cool new restaurants are opening, the sunsets are still a local secret, and discovery is part of the fun. Just the kind of insider scoop we love to bring to our guests.
By day, La Paz hums with life. Even on a weekday, the malecón (the beachfront promenade) fills with families, fishermen, and joggers against a backdrop of aquamarine sea. Just outside the city, Balandra Bay stuns with calm turquoise waters framed by dramatic desert hills – a place where you can swim, paddle, or hike rugged trails to take in surreal views before watching the sun melt into the horizon – the sunsets here are a must see. And when night falls, the city comes alive in a different way. La Paz’s culinary scene is blossoming with inventive concepts and new restaurants that balance ambition with an honesty of service that feels refreshingly real. It may not be polished, but it’s heartfelt – maybe the chef will bring your plate to the table and stay for a chat.
La Paz doesn’t shout for attention, and that’s exactly its charm. It’s a place that rewards those who take the time to look a little closer.
After our time on the peninsula, one thing is clear: Baja continues to blow us away. From whale encounters and desert horizons to rustic food stalls and authentically Mexican vineyards, it’s a place that surprises at every turn. But what makes it so special is the way all of these elements combine. Karina put it best: “this is a place rich in so many ways – a combination of the people, the nature, and the remoteness. In a city where ancient history and cutting-edge modernity share the same space, The Ritz-Carlton rises as a sanctuary above it all. Here, panoramic views meet warm Mexican hospitality, and every detail tells a story of elegance, culture, and place. We love this landmark property as a base for exploring the capital in VIP style – combining world-class comfort with the seamless delivery of experiences you won’t find anywhere else.
A Benchmark for Urban Luxury
This is undoubtedly the place to take in the grandeur of Mexico City – from its layered past to its bustling present. Towering 58 stories above the iconic Paseo de la Reforma avenue and the buzzing streets below, the striking glass tower housing The Ritz-Carlton not only redefines the city skyline but also reimagines a stay in the heart of this Mexican metropolis.
From its sky-high vantage point – the second tallest hotel in CDMX – The Ritz boasts a sweeping cinematic map of the capital: the endless green of Chapultepec Forest, one of the largest urban parks in the Americas that rivals New York’s Central Park; the steady rhythm of Reforma – the city’s main avenue once carved by Emperor Maximilian and now pulsing with financial powerhouses and business headquarters; and the silhouettes of museums, castles, and towers full of stories. It’s a view that captures the contrasts and continuity of the city – where centuries-old history meets modern commerce, and cultural heritage sits side by side with contemporary innovation.
Inside, that same philosophy continues through the design. Created by celebrated studio Chapi Chapo, the interiors are rooted in the surreal and the symbolic, with inspiration drawn from one of Mexico’s most important festivals – Day of the Dead. Subtle references appear throughout the hotel, from a sculpture on the lobby roof to rugs whose patterns evoke the swirls of copal smoke from remembrance altars. While the references are richly cultural, the aesthetic is unmistakably sleek. With clean lines throughout, glass-fronted rooms that dissolve the boundary between inside and out, and marble bathrooms that feel like grand private sanctuaries, every element is deliberate. In the suites, free-standing bathtubs allow you to take in panoramas of the city below as you soak into the skyline sipping a crisp glass of wine. In the public spaces, curved velvet seating and low lighting create a luxurious hush encouraging you to linger – like a private salon in the clouds.
Guest rooms are just as thoughtfully designed. Eighty percent feature spacious terraces, and every one of the 153 rooms is unique (“153 different stories,” as the team likes to say) meaning each stay is one of a kind. Details include coffee machines for enjoying your first cup of the day from bed, as well as smart technology to open and close curtains or adjust lighting at the touch of a button. Many suites can be connected, making them ideal for families, while the pinnacle Ritz-Carlton Suite offers a sweeping, almost narrative view of the city – its historic center evoking the past, Reforma’s lively energy capturing the present, and the sleek district of Santa Fe hinting at the future. For those looking to stick around a bit longer, the fully equipped Residences on the upper floors combine the space and privacy of an apartment with all the attentive service and comforts of the hotel.
A true downtown Mexico City hotel, The Ritz-Carlton brings the spirit, elegance, and complexity of the capital into every detail of the guest experience.
Legendary Service Rooted in Mexican Hospitality
Warm, intuitive, and deeply personal, Mexican hospitality is a cultural cornerstone. Whether greeting an old friend or welcoming a new guest, there’s an openness and generosity that permeates daily life: hugs and kisses at every hello, long family lunches, and an innate desire to make others feel at home. That spirit of welcome is everywhere in Mexico City, from the leafy streets of La Condesa to the buzzing cafés of Roma. And it is precisely this essence – warm, social, and gracious – that The Ritz-Carlton embodies in its service, elevating it into a luxury art form.
The service is as thoughtful as it is seamless. With a staff who don’t just anticipate your needs, but truly make you feel like a cherished guest, every stay is personalized, and every detail fine-tuned to your preferences. Whether you’re heading out for a day exploring the nearby neighborhoods of Juárez, Polanco, or Roma, or returning after a long afternoon in the museums and markets, the team ensures your experience feels easy yet refined. This ethos extends into every corner of the property: from the Club Lounge’s dedicated concierge team to the spa’s immersive, locally inspired treatments.
The spa, tucked away on the 12th floor, draws its inspiration from the four elements – wood, water, air, and fire – woven subtly into the design. Earthy tones ground the treatment rooms, a decorative pool channels the energy of water, and the signature Ritz-Carlton aroma drifts through the space like air itself. At the entrance, a glowing chimney brings the warmth of fire into the welcome. Among its most remarkable features is the Timeless Capsule – a cocoon-like relaxation chair developed with NASA technology, where 40 minutes of deep rest can feel like three hours. Guests can sink into the capsule for head or foot massages that melt away any trace of the outside rush – a world exclusive that can only be found here in Mexico City and at The Ritz-Carlton Miami.
The same attention to detail is evident in the hotel’s dining spaces. At Samos, Mexican flavors take center stage, with dishes inspired by regions across the country and a particular flair for seafood – a personal favorite is the delicate fish encased in a peanut crust, or the elevated traditional Oaxacan Tlayuda. Just steps away, Carlota Reforma Bar invites guests to cherish those skyline views that just never get old, with a craft cocktail in hand, and a light bite too, if it takes your fancy.
What sets The Ritz-Carlton apart isn’t just the amenities (although they are exceptional), but the intention behind them. Everything has been curated to help guests feel both indulged and immersed – to soak up the rhythm and richness of Mexico’s capital, while resting in refined comfort.
A Journey to Remember
Hotel stays are often memorable. But others feel entirely cinematic. We’ve crafted an exclusive six-day itinerary around a stay at The Ritz-Carlton, designed to unfold like a true blockbuster – seamlessly blending ultra-luxe with meaningful cultural immersion.
From the moment you arrive – we’d recommend flying in by private helicopter, landing directly on the hotel’s rooftop helipad – you’re in expert hands. Settle into your Park View Suite, complete with a private terrace and Club Lounge access, and let the city unfold beneath you. Perched above Reforma’s grandeur and flanked by the lush canopy of Chapultepec Park, The Ritz-Carlton becomes your sleek launchpad for exploring one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
Over the course of six days, we’ve woven together a journey that reflects the essence of Mexico City: in all of its glory, intimacy, and contrasts. With privileged access and thoughtful guidance throughout, you’ll be invited into spaces to enjoy moments that few ever experience. Glide over volcanoes and pyramids on scenic helicopter rides, walk the ancient avenues of Teotihuacan with a seasoned archaeologist at your side, step into Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul for a private, after-hours visit followed by a candlelit dinner in her garden. Soar south by helicopter to the “floating gardens” of Xochimilco, cruising the serene canals to the tune of a live mariachi band.
Even the city’s most iconic landmarks – the National Museum of Anthropology, Chapultepec Castle, Diego Rivera’s murals – take on an entirely new dimension when experienced after public hours, in complete privacy, guided by experts who bring their hidden stories to life. And when the day winds down, your return to The Ritz feels like a reward in itself. Enjoy a soul-soothing ritual at the spa before a sunset cocktail at Carlota Bar, followed by an elegant dinner at Ling Ling – with every moment elevated by the hotel’s signature attention to detail and warm, intuitive service.
We love how The Ritz-Carlton matches Journey Mexico’s dedicated commitment to excellence, authenticity, and service. Together, we invite guests to experience Mexico City not just as a destination, but as a story to be lived – one that begins high above the capital and leaves memories to be savored.
With over two decades of crafting luxury travel in Mexico, we know how to design experiences your clients will never forget. From seamless full-service planning to round-the-clock virtual travel assistance, every detail is handled with care. Cancun has long been a favorite for sun-seekers and beach lovers who flock to the coastline’s buzzing hotels. If you’re looking to enjoy the gorgeous scenery without the crowds, the Waldorf Astoria makes it easy: from location to luxury to comfort.
Just 15 minutes from the airport, this polished beachfront property delivers the kind of effortless luxury that feels tailor-made for travelers looking to switch off without compromise. Whether it’s couples seeking a quiet spa retreat, families wanting a low-stress break with enough to keep everyone entertained, or city dwellers escaping the pace of daily life, this is a place where everything is taken care of. With attentive service and elegant dining, a beach and pool within arm’s reach, and the option to explore more if the mood strikes, Waldorf offers all the sophistication of a high-end city hotel, set to the rhythm of the sea. With Journey Mexico guiding the details – from airport pick-up to curated experiences – we deliver a seamless stay from start to finish, because we know it intimately: which room numbers to book, the local spots worth seeking out, and the best ways to experience this corner of the Riviera Maya in style.
This Is What We Call Downtime…
Whether you’re spending your entire day by the sea or unwinding between Riviera Maya adventures, the Waldorf sets the tone for relaxation. The golf carts of larger resorts in the area are exchanged for a walkable layout. The beach is right there, the infinity pool is just steps away, and you can stroll to a choice of five restaurants, each catering to a different mood. Perhaps some fresh ceviche in your swimsuit after a refreshing dip in the ocean? Or maybe an elegant dinner under the stars, dressed to impress with a glass of something crisp in hand? Whether you’re feeling casual or refined, there’s a dining spot to match.
The spa – one of the best we’ve seen in the region – is a true sanctuary, offering Yaxché-inspired Mayan rituals, a hydrotherapy circuit, and deeply restorative treatments across 21 rooms. For couples, families, or anyone in need of a reset, this is the kind of place where you can truly switch off. The spa is the cherry on top. More than just a beautiful space, it’s been incredibly well thought out, with a relaxing energy that permeates into the flow of any stay here. Restorative, immersive, and a central part of what makes this place so rejuvenating – you can’t miss taking time out here to kick back and relax.
Why We Love the Waldorf
A stay at this property leaves you feeling completely recharged. We love that it’s so easy to get to, yet you feel far from the bustle once you’ve arrived – it’s very much a seamless escape. You’re guaranteed a great view from the comfort of your own private space, with every single room facing the ocean – the corner suites are particularly special!
It’s a great stay for couples or families looking for an easy long weekend escape in the sun, with tropical scenery, relaxed luxury, and everything you need within easy reach. And if the mood takes you, there’s plenty more to discover on-site: from paddleboarding to mezcal tastings.
When guests are ready to explore the best sites nearby, Journey is always on hand to provide a smooth and enjoyable experience. Many of our travelers tell us they value how we help them connect with local culture and nature in ways that feel both enriching and accessible – something that pairs perfectly with the Waldorf experience.
The Riviera Maya Awaits
The hotel’s prime location makes this the ideal launchpad for those keen to explore beyond the resort, with Journey on hand to handle everything else. From our decades of experience getting under the skin of Mexico, building relationships with locals, deepening our understanding of traditions, and uncovering hidden gems, we can craft personalized itineraries that showcase the very best of the Riviera Maya. Each journey is tailored to your travel style from start to finish, so whether you’re after pure relaxation, slow-paced exploration, or a dose of adventure to balance out time by the pool, we begin by understanding exactly what kind of break you want and create from there.
Imagine exploring a subterranean cenote system that’s all yours for the afternoon, swimming and hiking through crystal-clear waters surrounded by nothing but the echo of dripping water and the stillness of ancient rock formations. Thanks to our local connections, we can turn what’s often a crowded tourist stop into a once-in-a-lifetime moment of peace and awe. Head out to picture-perfect Isla Mujeres, where palm trees sway lazily in the sea breeze and the sand is so white it almost glows. We’ll organize a private yacht to take you there, anchoring in quiet coves where you can snorkel colorful reefs, relax on deck with a glass of something cold, and even spot seasonal whale sharks.
Isla Mujeres
For a taste of local culture, we’ll show you the places we know and love. In the nearby coastal town of Puerto Morelos, let us recommend restaurants to suit your mood – whether it’s tacos and lobster with beachside cocktails at the laid-back Merkadito, or a more elevated seafood experience upstairs at Punta Corcho, right on the town square. Prefer a slower afternoon? We can guide you to the cobbled colonial streets of Valladolid, with one of our favorite long-lunch spots tucked away in a shady courtyard. Journey is your guide for where to go, when to go, and how to make the most of it.
Booking the right hotel in Cancun isn’t just about seeking out the five-star spots, it’s also about finding a place that truly delivers the kind of experience you’re craving. With Journey Mexico as your expert, you’ll enjoy all the ease and elegance of a luxury Caribbean escape, with none of the stress. We know how to avoid the crowds, where to tap into local culture in comfort, and how to pair the Waldorf’s refined serenity with the kind of meaningful memories that stay with you for years to come. Explore what an itinerary in the Riviera Maya could look like and tap into the local knowledge of our travel experts who’ll help you create your perfect Riviera Maya retreat. Let’s build something beautiful together.

Mandarina is Perfect for Families and Adventure Seekers
Tucked into paradise shores just over an hour’s drive north of Puerto Vallarta Airport, Mandarina captures the best of the Riviera Nayarit – a land of lush coastal jungle, mango trees, ancient cultures, and awe-inspiring sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Luxury brands are taking notice of this stunning enclave – the resort opened in 2020 as part of a multi-billion-dollar project to create a secluded, luxurious, and low-impact destination on the undeveloped coastline. One&Only Mandarina feels quiet, hidden, and truly immersed in nature – an alternative to the well-oiled resorts and villa communities of nearby Punta Mita.
This is the kind of place where staff share their pride in local culture, where no trees were sacrificed for construction, that lights firepits on the beach as a nightly ritual and has secret rock carvings etched hundreds of years ago by the native Cora and Huichol communities. We love this setting for nature-rich and family adventures.
Family Highlights:
More than a place to keep the young ones busy, KidsOnly is an open-air, multisensory playground designed by the award-winning art director behind Moulin Rouge. Think butterfly sanctuary, climbing walls, treehouses connected by suspension bridges and scavenger hunts in tropical rainforest.
Relax with an ice-cold drink as the kids make a splash in Alma restaurant’s infinity pools with jaw-dropping vistas or settle in at Jetty and Canalan Beach Clubs where shaded areas, sandpits and water sports keep the whole family entertained.
Enjoy fun activities like mountain biking through rainforest trails, ziplines, rappeling, jungle obstacle courses, meeting the Equestrian Center’s horses and foals, or a family cooking session with the pastry chef.
Explore the unique ecosystem that Mandarina calls home on a guided nature walk to meet La Abuela (The Grandmother) and Los Nietos (The Grandkids) – an incredible 500-year-old white fig tree with the new generation growing next to her.
Get involved in seasonal turtle release programs and spot the magnificent humpback whales during their winter migration to warmer Pacific waters.
Large multi-room villas are ideal for families, like the breezy two-bedroom Villa Banderas with canopy or ocean views.
Palmilla is Perfect for Romance, Wellness and Relaxation
This legendary hotel is located along the eastern reaches of Los Cabos’ Tourist Corridor, just a 30-minute drive from SJD airport. The property has a rich history dating to the 1950s, when it was built as a 15-room hideaway for the son of a former Mexican president and soon became a favorite for Hollywood stars. Perched right where the Sonoran Desert slopes down into the Sea of Cortez, the resort sits on a marine hotspot with some of Los Cabos’ few swimmable beaches. A stay at One&Only Palmilla brings a mix of old-world glamour and second-to-none service with a backdrop of breathtaking ocean views from almost every area of the resort. Cinematic panoramas and an air of sophistication make for an experience rooted in comfort, beauty, and the finer things in life.
This is the kind of place where the butlers remember you from past trips, you get a complimentary dose of foot massage by the pool, and a team member may clean your sunglasses while you take a dip. Feel pampered, indulged, and taken care of – perfect for a romantic couple’s escape or a relaxing trip among friends.
Luxury Highlights:
Private butler service in every room, elevating the stay with personalized touches and dedicated attention.
Thoughtful details in guest rooms include Bose sound systems, binoculars and al fresco daybeds (spot marine life, stargaze and sip coffee to the crash of waves), and premium linen, pillow and bathrobe menus for Casita and One Bedroom Suites.
Immaculate oceanview infinity pools (including adults only) and private beach cabanas with O&O service.
World-class dining by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten at Seared and Suviche.
Teeing off on the private greens of Palmilla Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course.
Award-winning spa set in secluded tropical gardens – private couples’ treatments, tailored wellness journeys, ancient Maya rituals, exclusiveskincare treatments by Dr Barbara Sturm, and more.
The Journey Mexico Touch
We love working with One&Only – we know they can deliver the premium level of service and care that our travelers expect. Beyond the resort, Journey Mexico takes care of your entire trip, from private door-to door vehicles and personalized experiences that connect you to the local surroundings, to tables at coveted restaurants and itinerary changes on the fly.
Our travelers have told us just how much they value having a dedicated Virtual Travel Assistant while in Mexico – a member of our in-country team who knows your itinerary inside out and is available 24/7 for anything you might need. It’s like having a trusted local friend guide you through your journey and take care of the details, while you live in the moment.
What to Do in the Destinations
Around One&Only Palmilla, southern Baja California is defined by desert-meets-ocean beauty, rich marine life, dramatic coastal rock formations, and proximity to mountain oases and wetlands. This small area alone captures the geological and ecological contrasts that make Baja so unique and is one of the rare places where you can snorkel in warm seas, hike a desert canyon, and explore a mountain forest – all within an hour.
Only with Journey Mexico: our travelers love visiting Isla Espíritu Santo by Air – take to the skies on a scenic charter flight to La Paz, then explore the UNESCO-protected, uninhabited island by private boat. Snorkel beside playful sea lions, learn about the island’s volcanic geography, and picnic on pristine white sands.
The diverse coastal region surrounding One&Only Mandarina encompasses charming beach towns, beloved local surf spots, and stunning natural beauty. Getting out on the water is a must to take in the glory of the ocean-meets-mountain environment. Witness dolphins and seasonal humpback whales from a private yacht or fish for the catch of the day and savor the freshest ceviche prepared on the spot. Spend the afternoon in the buzzy town of Sayulita sipping agave spirits like a local or drive a thrilling ATV through dirt trails winding through the jungle. For the surf fanatics and surf-curious – we’d love to take you to our Founder’s favorite secluded waves with pro local guides who became friends long ago – just ask!
With Journey Mexico: set out on a private boat to explore the rocky beauty of the Marieta Islands, formed offshore thousands of years ago. Snorkel amongst vibrant marine life, paddle past volcanic formations, and step onto Playa de Amor – a hidden beach nestled inside a sunken, open-sky crater.
Whether it’s wild adventures in the jungle or refined romance by the sea, our team is here to guide you to the One&Only experience that’s just right for you. Let us handle the details – you just show up and enjoy the journey.
A boutique stay that celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history and creative soul.
Andaz Condesa stands out as a luxury boutique hotel that feels both personal and creative, incorporating a refreshing mix of bold design, cultural richness, and skyline views. Boasting character in spades, it reflects the eclectic, ever-evolving energy of its surroundings. Here’s why we think this property is a prime place to stay while you’re in the capital.
Channeling Local Culture
Founded in the 1920s, the Condesa neighborhood’s Art Deco buildings and verdant parklands speak to its storied past, yet its energy today is unmistakably modern. Amid the historic architecture you’ll find leafy boulevards buzzing with cafés, galleries, and creatives, shaping a cultural hub that strikes a balance between heritage and contemporary edge.
Andaz is perched proudly within the i421 Live District. Once known as Conjunto Aristos, this pioneering 1960s complex was designed by renowned architect José Luis Benlliure Galán and celebrated for its avant-garde approach to blending business, leisure, and public space in one single site. The design, a network of interconnected towers, reaches 18-stories high at its peak and features a central public square at its base. We love how the 2022 revamp carefully preserved original features like the beautiful patio floor on the ground level, along with Benlliure Galán’s artwork—two splendid exterior murals that feature loose geometric lines representing the Panathenaic procession. Today, the courtyard shared by Andaz Condesa and its neighbor, Mondrian, is a laid-back yet happening spot where city goers sip coffee in the lobby with designer dogs in tow – an extension of the area’s pet-friendly spirit.
As you cross the threshold into Andaz, you’ll notice it continues to beautifully reflect Condesa’s dual identity of modernity rooted in history. Throughout the space, original and homage 60s details—curved wooden paneling, iron-framed windows and patterns of structural triangles—quietly nod to the past, while bold, playful interiors bring a vibrant contrast. Neon lights, bright colors, and striking installations set the tone, including a suspended sculpture by Jan Hendrix above the first-floor escalators. The hotel’s clever use of light and open space, inspired by the legendary work of Luis Barragán, maintains an indoor-outdoor feel that mirrors Condesa´s breezy, creative atmosphere.
What to Do at the Hotel
Cultural energy continues to weave throughout Andaz beyond the artwork. At ground level, the open-air patio is certainly a highlight. One unit brings together a flower shop, wine bar, and curated brands such as organic Mexican coffee, kombuchas, and artisanal beauty products. It’s a lifestyle snapshot of the area; a mini Condesa within Condesa, where you can mingle, browse, and soak up the spirit of the neighborhood even before stepping out onto the tree-lined streets.
Insider Tip: Keep an eye out for the i421 owner’s vintage cars parked in the courtyard—perhaps a gleaming Mustang or a stately Rolls-Royce—equal parts impressive and nostalgic.
Upstairs, things open up—literally! The property is home to the highest rooftop in the neighborhood, which means some of the best panoramic views over Mexico City’s skyline. It’s rare to find a boutique hotel that offers such a vantage point. From up here, you can spot the iconic Torre Virreyes (the Dorito!) building, Torre Latinoamericana, and, on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the distant volcanoes framing the city, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Whilst the vibe is laid back, live DJs bring this space to life on weekends. The rooftop Cabuya Restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy Mexican-Caribbean flavors with those wonderful vistas as a backdrop – we highly recommend booking a table on weekends. When taking the elevator up to the restaurant on the 17th floor, we were wowed as the doors opened straight out to a rooftop space bursting with personality. Bold murals, ceiling-slung greenery, and splashes of tropical flowers create an atmosphere that’s playful and buzzing—don’t miss crunching into the tuna tostada with an ice-cold drink at sunset.
The dining and drinking options continue as you work your way down the hotel. Wooftop Beer Garden & Canine Club is a thoughtful terrace where dogs are not just welcome, but catered to, with a dedicated food truck menu and agility course. Inside, the Bulldog Sports Bar keeps things casual and fun with games, match screenings, and drinks. Back on the ground floor patio area, Portico serves buffet breakfasts in a space stylishly inspired by Art Deco. Andaz Condesa proactively embraces cultural moments – from Día de los Muertos altars and face painting, to rooftop Pride celebrations, Zona Maco art week exhibitions, and Formula One watch parties in the courtyard. At Christmas, Santa pays a visit with gifts for the little ones, who also delight in the hotel’s Easter egg hunts. These moments all connect you to the country’s rich traditions, making every stay feel a little more rooted in place.
Our Favorite Features
The hotel’s thoughtful amenities and culturally rich aesthetic make it a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time, whether you’re staying for a night or settling in for longer. Each guest room is artfully curated, with warm tones and those Barragán-esque pops of colour. Imaginative details add character – from colourful alebrije dog figurines typical of Mexico (your own room mascot!) to a vintage aerial photo of Parque México, once a horse racing track at the center of the neighborhood. Benlliure Galán’s Greek-inspired murals are echoed in the design, where abstract interpretations hang as headboards. For a standout stay, choose the Andaz Suite—perched high above the city with generous space and sweeping views—or enjoy Suite Terraza’s bathtub and stunning cityscapes from a private terrace. We love the detail of a vinyl player in each room along with a selection of records (swap them out at the lobby), an ode to both to the building’s past life when a record shop occupied part of the complex and the neighborhood’s broader musical heritage, including the beloved La Roma Records.
There’s plenty to make sure you don’t get bored at Andaz. As well as the games on offer to get stuck into at Bulldog Sports Bar, there’s a compact rooftop pool to enjoy – modest in size, and generous in its views. Kick off the day taking advantage of the well-equipped fitness suite, or head to Pasana, the property’s beauty and wellness center, offering massages and stylists from a revered boutique hair salon. For a more casual kind of indulgence, Derba Matcha Café serves up cocktails, homemade pastries, and matcha drinks in a comfy sunlit setting. Named in honor of Mimi Derba – Mexico’s first female film director – it’s once again a fitting tribute to the legacy of the place, combining the history, art and modern culture, that resonates throughout the building.
Peppered with character and contrasts, Andaz Condesa is not just a place to stay, but an expression of its local surroundings, blending old and new, rest and energy, elegance and play. Whether you’re here for the views, the vinyl, or the vibrant patio hangouts, this is a hotel that provides the perfect launchpad to explore the iconic Mexico City in all its glory.

Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, the Mexican Caribbean has a way of leaving a lasting impression.
From the moment you arrive, there’s something unmistakable in the air—a sense of calm, discovery, and awe. The softness of the sand, the clarity of the sea, and the vibrant blues that stretch to the horizon aren’t just beautiful—they’re transformative.
That was our first impression upon arriving at Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya. Set within a secluded bay and designed to harmonize effortlessly with its natural surroundings, this exceptional resort redefines beachfront luxury with intention and elegance. Here’s what makes it stand out.
A Secluded Retreat—Closer Than You Think
While Conrad Tulum presents a dreamlike escape for nature lovers, its privileged location offers the best of both worlds: seclusion without sacrificing proximity to points of interest. Just one hour from Tulum International Airport, guests can arrive with ease and dive straight into that coveted, classic coastal experience.
A private road winds through mangrove forests and protected jungle zones, leading you to this tucked-away paradise. If you feel like venturing beyond the 30 acres of this expansive property, you’re just 20 minutes from Tulum’s celebrated zona hotelera and a short drive from some of the most culturally significant archaeological sites in the Yucatán Peninsula.
A Space Refined by Nature
When we say the architecture of Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya gently embraces its private bay, we don’t mean it metaphorically. The resort’s six low-rise residential buildings, or casas, are arranged in a sweeping horseshoe shape—a strategic design that maximizes the connection between the built environment and the natural world.
Throughout the grounds, bike paths and jungle trails invite guests to explore at their own pace. Complimentary bicycles are provided, and expert-led nature walks are available for adventurers of all ages eager to learn more about the region’s rich biodiversity.
The property is divided into three distinct enclaves, each anchored by a pristine infinity pool with uninterrupted sea views and a “chiringuito”. These open-air, palapa-roofed eateries serve waterfront bites and ice-cold drinks, a nod to the laid-back, rustic beach bars found in seaside destinations.
Leña specializes in locally seasoned pizzas, fresh salads, and crisp paninis.
Crudo is a coastal homage to Mexico’s seafood traditions.
Carbón offers gourmet tacos and grilled meats over an open flame.
This clever layout ensures the resort always feels open and uncrowded—even at full capacity.
And let’s not forget the beachfront—an expanse of pristine white sand backed by a calm, private bay. The resort actively manages sargassum with offshore barriers and a dedicated team that clears the shore each morning, so all you’ll need to focus on is basking under the Caribbean sun.
Crafted for Rest—Curated for Wonder
A total of 349 thoughtfully designed rooms stretches across the three floors of Conrad Tulum’s six casas—each one with a minimal, tropical, and sleek design, finished with handcrafted details by local artisans. While all rooms face the water, the experience shifts with elevation: ground-floor suites are enveloped by the jungle, while third-floor accommodation is ideal if you’re drawn to sweeping Caribbean seascapes.
Insider Tip: Traveling with family? Ask your Journey Mexico specialist about interconnecting suites—the best way to stay close while giving everyone their own space.
For those seeking a more exclusive experience, the Ceiba Club delivers an elevated tier of hospitality. With larger suites, private plunge pools, and personal concierge service, this is Conrad luxury at a higher frequency.
On-site dining is anything but ordinary. With 11 restaurants dotted throughout the resort, guests embark on a global tasting voyage—from casual bites to destination-worthy fine dining. While every venue tells a unique culinary story, these three stole our hearts (and taste buds):
Maratea – A celebration of Mediterranean and Italian coastal cuisine. The sommelier curates a wine list that includes bottles from Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s answer to Napa.
Ukai – A Japanese concept built around fresh, local catch. Worth noting: every bite is not only delicious but also environmentally conscious, thanks to the #PescaConFuturo program
Arbolea – A personalized buffet-style breakfast where every station offers a mix of national and international flavors. Be sure to try the French toast!
Yet the crown jewel is undoubtedly Autor. Conrad Tulum’s flagship restaurant takes traditional Mexican recipes and reimagines them with depth, intention, and daring originality. As the only Hilton property globally with a Michelin mention, it’s no surprise that Autor is expected to earn its first star soon.
No stay would be complete without a visit to the award-winning Conrad Spa, which recently earned a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Rating. With 14 treatment rooms, a full hydrotherapy circuit, and rituals using locally sourced botanicals, this wellness sanctuary offers an open invitation to immerse yourself in the soothing spirit of Tulum.
Take it at Your Own Pace
Spend your days exactly as you like. Whether you’re drawn to explore land and sea, unwind beneath the shade of a poolside cabana, or immerse yourself in Maya-inspired rituals and locally sourced flavors, the resort offers a rich spectrum of possibilities.
Ocean lovers will be glad to know the hotel provides all the gear needed for aquatic adventures. Glide across the Caribbean on a paddleboard or grab your snorkel and discover a world beneath the surface—teeming with tropical fish and intricate coral formations unique to the Riviera Maya.
Prefer to stay grounded? Start your perfect morning with a sun salutation on the beach, or join the resort’s running club, guided biking through jungle trails, Pilates, and abs clinics—all set in the most stunning natural surroundings.
Did all that movement spark your appetite? Every three months, Autor transforms into the venue for CuMé, a one-of-a-kind gastronomic experience. Short for Culto a México, CuMé is a tribute to Mexico’s culinary soul, where ancestral techniques meet modern artistry in a multi-course celebration of heritage, emotion, and flavor.
But that’s just one of many delicious offerings. Here are other mouth-watering ideas:
Wine Journey
Explore Mexico’s top wine regions with the hotel’s sommelier, paired with chef-curated hors d’oeuvres inspired by each locale.
Tequila Tasting
Savor four of Mexico’s best tequilas, accompanied by a storytelling session and flavor-paired bites.
Corn Journey
Embark on a five-course tasting inspired by “maíz”—the sacred foundation of ancient and contemporary Mexican gastronomy.
For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, the resort also offers healing experiences rooted in tradition. Guided by the in-house shaman, you’ll have the chance to participate in gratitude rituals, cacao ceremonies with regional influences, and cenote gatherings for renewal and release.
Traveling with young adventurers? The Kids Club offers the perfect space for children eager to learn through play! Face painting, dreamcatcher crafts, piñata-building workshops, jungle treasure hunts, and beach movie nights are just a few examples of the eco-cultural activities they’ll surely love.
Meanwhile, older kids can hang out in the Teens Zone, where a mix of games, DIY projects, and flexible come-and-go access lets them explore their passions and meet other like-minded guests.
