2014 Tianguis Turistico in Cancun

Mexico’s annual Tianguis Turistico will be held in Cancun next year. Tianguis is the most important travel trade show in Mexico, providing an important platform for travel industry professionals to meet with hundreds of  Mexico tourism service providers. Unlike other travel trade shows, the three day event is entirely focused on one destination and topic: the promotion of Mexico.

Tianguis Turistico in Cancun and Riviera Maya

For 36 years straight, the event was held in Acapulco, Guerrero before making its first move to Puerto Vallarta in 2012. Deciding which city to host the event after 36 years was not an easy task; destinations had to submit proposals as to why they should be host and prove they have the infrastructure required. It is clear why Cancun was chosen for 2014; it has over 32,000 hotel rooms (70,000+ if you include the Riviera Maya), several AAA  4 and 5 Diamond properties, the largest Latin American international airport with the most connectivity and high quality services and framework.

Cancun has already started preparations for Tianguis Turistico. The Mexico Tourism Board is making an initial investment of 40 million pesos, while federal and state government in Quintana Roo will invest 80 million pesos. In an interview with MexicoNews.Travel, Robert Borge Angula, Governor of Quintana Roo, said, “We are already preparing and doing very well with the first arrangements, regarding the productions of such a important event, while also evaluating all the areas of the event. We are very well prepared and we would like to have at least two venues for the fair.”  Later it was announced that the main host for the event will be the Moon Palace Resort on the southern part of Cancun’s Peninsula. The Cancun Center and Xcaret are also being considered as a venue for opening and closing ceremonies.

The event dates are still not set, but it is speculated to be held in May instead of March or April.
Juan Carlos González Hernández, Minister of Tourism for Quintana Roo, is requesting this change because he says “[March through April] is a period in which hotel occupancy rates are an average of 92%, which would complicate the touistic festivities.” Cancun is also setting expectations for attendees; while 2013 Tianguis Turistico in Puebla was record breaking, Cancun is expecting to surpass it with at least 45 different countries present. Angula commented on the goal, ”[Quintana Roo] is a very well positioned state not only in Mexico, but also in the whole Caribbean as well as Latin America…”

Puebla City Highlights from Tianguis Turistico

The most important event in Mexico’s tourism, Tianguis Turistico, continues to grow as expectations in terms of buyers and attendance have exceeded and broken record the past two years. Being held for the first time in Puebla, the 38th edition Tianguis Turistico was the largest in terms of countries represented — with over 42 present. For the 25,000+ attendees, events, parties, lunches, and tours were held all around the city. Puebla dazzled and delighted its visitors during the four day event showing off their cultural and historical highlights that warrants the recognition to be named a  UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here are some of the places highlighted in Puebla during Tianguis Turistico:

Civic Center Cinco de Mayo
The Puebla Convention Center is located on the foothills of the Cerro Los Fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe, which is where the Battle of Puebla on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) took place back in 1862. Today, the Civic Center Cinco de Mayo remains as a place of major importance in the history of Mexico and is commemorated by memorial monuments, the old fort structures Fuerte de Loreto and Fuerte de Guadalupe,  and interactive museums of military history and talavera.

Travel Trade Show 2013: Tianguis Turistico Puebla

Puebla Tianguis

Puebla is gearing up for the 38th Edition of the Tianguis Turistico — Mexico’s most important travel trade show. The fair will be held from March 17th to March 20th at the Exhibition Center in the state’s capital,  providing a unique business arena where domestic and international purchasers are able to meet with over 500 Mexican tourism service providers.

For 36 years, Tianguis Turistico had been held in Acapulco before deciding to become a traveling tourism fair, making its first stop in 2012 at the beach destination of Puerto Vallarta.  Puebla will be the first colonial destination of the Tianguis Turistico Mexico. While last year had a record-breaking attendance of 1,400 buyers and 7,500 attendees, this year Mexico is expecting to exceed that number with 1,500 buyers from 33 countries. Puebla was chosen as this year’s host because of it abundance of cultural and historical significance. In fact, the city of Puebla was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. Puebla commented that it will be a proud host and as part of preparations for Tianguis’ activities, the city has invested more than 300 million pesos in infrastructure.

If you are unfamiliar with Puebla, it has exquisite architecture which can be seen in its many churches and convents and it is also where some of the popular dishes of Mexican cuisine come from –such as chiles en nogada (a colorful blend of poblano peppers topped with a creamy walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds) and mole poblano. Puebla also is proudly home to seven Pueblos Magicos — recognized ‘Magical Towns’ that imbue certain characteristics and experiences through architecture, traditions, customs, music, gastronomy, festivities and handcrafts.

Travel Fair 2012 – Largest in Mexico to be held in Puerto Vallarta in March

Puerto Vallarta Travel FairPuerto Vallarta is pulling out all the stops for the 37th annual Tourism Tianguis Mexico travel fair 2012 that is being held in the Puerto Vallarta Convention Center from March 25th through March 28th of 2012. Every year, this event is held to find new ways to strengthen tourism in Mexico.

According to the director of this exciting event, Miguel González González, this year’s travel fair will focus on Mexico’s core attractions including beach destinations, adventure tourism, luxury resorts and business travel. If you’re attending Tianguis 2012, you will also be presented with a wide range of hands-on activities that will make this event the most successful Mexican travel fair to date. Depending on your interests, you can take part in a golf tournament, view a fireworks show and attend numerous cultural events. You can view the site for the Tianguis Turistico here.

To keep everyone organized and make sure they don’t miss a thing, this year’s Tourism Tianguis is going hi-tech. Participants will have access to an interactive website, a new appointment system, streaming information to their mobile devices and a number of other organizational and Tourism Tianguis Puerto Vallartacommunication tools.

This year’s event is already demonstrating a heightened level of interest in Mexican tourism. Here are a few numbers that illustrate this increase year over year:

  • Buyer participation has increased by 50 percent.
  • Business appointments have increased by 25 percent.
  • The number of registered countries has increased by 30 percent.
  • This year’s venue offers 67 percent more space.

So far, the Mexican government has invested 65 million pesos to this event, but they expect the payoff to local businesses to approach 118 million pesos. Part of this effort includes the new Malecon, improved access roads and a restored historic center. With this preparation, Puerto Vallarta is positioned to impress both the travel industry and visiting tourists.

If you’re planning to attend this travel fair or visit Puerto Vallarta for any reason, give Journey Mexico a call. Both Matteo and Rene will be attending from Journey Mexico. We can help you choose the best accommodations for your stay and give you valuable inside information about the best things to do in this lovely part of Mexico.

2012 Tianguis to be Held in Puerto Vallarta

After several months of debate, it’s official – Mexico’s annual Tianguis Turistico will be held in Puerto Vallarta next year. Tianguis is the most important travel trade show in Mexico, providing a unique business arena where domestic and international purchasers are able to meet with over 500 Mexican tourism service providers. The 2012 Tianguis will be the first time the event has been held outside the city of Acapulco since the event’s inception, and the city of Puerto Vallarta couldn’t be happier about the decision.

Earlier today, The Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita tweeted: “We are so proud Riv Nayarit & Puerto Vallarta won for be the host of the 2012 Tianguis Turistico!! Worked so hard for this,” reflecting the buzz that has quickly engulfed the media outlets of Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nyarit, the new hot spot of Mexico’s Pacific Coast. The P.V. Mirror, one of Puerto Vallarta’s top print/online news sources recently posted on Facebook: “We beat 18 other destinations (including Cancún, Mazatlán, Querétaro, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City) to host the biggest tourism trade fair in Mexico – The Tianguis!!! Congratulations to all concerned and involved!”

Although booming with expats (Puerto Vallarta was recently named the number one place to retire abroad by the AARP), Puerto Vallarta has seen a decline in tourism over the past few years due to the relentless negative reports about Mexico pouring out of US media. It seems you can’t keep a good city down, however, as Puerto Vallarta has been chosen to host a portion of the 16th chapter of the Pan American Games later this year and now looks forward to hosting the 10,000+ buyers expected to attend the 2012 Tianguis as well.

The primary Journey Mexico office has been located in Puerto Vallarta since the company originally moved to Mexico in 2006, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome the Tianguis and its participants into our beautiful home on the sea!

Tianguis on the Move

Tanguis Turistico on the MoveGloria Guevara, Mexico’s Minister of Tourism, has announced that for the first time since its inception, the annual Tianguis Turistico will not be held in Acapulco next year. Tianguis is, hands down, the most important travel trade show in Mexico, providing a unique business arena where domestic and international purchasers are able to meet with over 500 Mexican tourism service providers.

For 36 years, Tianguis has been held in the beautiful Port of Acapulco but beginning in 2012, the event will become a traveling show to be held in a different city in Mexico each year. The change brings about mixed emotions as when one thinks of Tianguis, one naturally thinks of Acapulco; however, many see the relevancy for the event to be mobile, offering participants to experience different regions and cultures of Mexico each year.

When asked about the decision to hold Tianguis in different locations around Mexico, Zachary Rabinor, founder and president of Journey Mexico, said, “I’ve attended Tianguis Turistico since 2003, so I’ve been attending for 8 years now.  I believe that it will be a great benefit to Mexico as it will allow Mexico to showcase its diverse destinations to both Mexican and International attendees!”

Have you been to Tianguis Turistico before? What do you think about the decision to take the event on the road? Let us know in the comments below!

Reports are that the event was a huge success as representatives from 22 global markets were represented including China, Chile, Czech Republic, and Poland.

Travel Weekly posted a nice review of the event. Below are some standout quotes:

  • Mexico is targeting 26 million visitors this year, up from the 22.4 million in 2010, according to Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara.
  •

  • Visitor figures for January point to a 1.7% increase over January 2010 and solid advance bookings heading into the Easter period and beyond, according to Guevara.
  •

  • Mazatlan tourism officials urged travel agents, tour operators, airlines and wholesale partners to “have confidence in us” in the face of a cruise line pullout earlier this year.
  •

  • Officials are working with the government to develop a strategic master plan for tourism growth and said talks with cruise lines are ongoing in an effort to gain the return of the lines for the next cruise season.
  •

  • Carlos Berdegue, vice president of the Mazatlan Hotel Association, pointed to the launch of American’s daily service from Dallas on June 9, the planned development of a new resort area called Teacapan 60 miles south of the Pacific coast city and a new TV campaign featuring testimonials from U.S. visitors to reinforce the message that “there is an appetite for Mazatlan. We need tourism to revitalize our economy.”
  •

  • Guevara outlined details of the recently launched “I Am A Tourist” program designed to increase domestic tourism, and cited the increase in seat capacity and frequency by U.S. carriers serving Mexico. She said that Air France’s launch of nonstop service three times a week between Paris and Cancun Oct. 21 “reinforces the strength of Mexico for the European market. Airlines follow demand.
