Mexico Travel Updates, New Hotels in 2017: Cancun, Cabo, Nayarit and More

From the Pacific to the Caribbean , Mexico continues to expand their tourism offerings with new hotels and innovative attractions. And with increased flights into Mexico thanks to lifted aviation restrictions, getting to Mexico will be easier than ever in 2017. Here is a look for what’s in store for this year, and beyond…. ….and incase you missed it, here’s what happened in 2016

 

Cancun and Riviera Maya

Set to open March 1 is UNICO 20°87° an all-inclusive hotel whose name refers to its geographic coordinates. The new property will have 448 guestrooms, a wellness center and spa, five restaurants and six bars. Within the all-inclusive package, guests will enjoy a full-time personalized local host, select spa treatments, golf and off-site excursions.

Woodward Riviera Maya, a 20,000 sq. ft lifestyle and action sports powerhouse will open at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in the spring/summer 2017. The Camp Woodward facility will offer the one-of-a-kind chance to snowboard and snow ski, along with a skate and BMX park, parkour, cheer and hip hop dance programs and amenities, trampoline, a Digital Media Camp and more.

Set to open December 2017, Garza Blanca Resort & Spa, will open its second property in Playa del Carmen. A multiple award-winner for its Puerto Vallarta location, the all-suite hotel will have three dining venues, a luxury spa and gym and offer an all-inclusive  option.

Los Cabos

Previously known as the development of VieVage Los Cabos, Auberge Resorts Collection has changed their property name to Chileno Bay Resort & Residences and plans to open February 1, 2017. Set on a swimmable beach in the Chileno Bay,  accommodations include 60 guest rooms and 32 villas with private pools.

Originally scheduled for a 2016 opening, The Ritz Carlton Reserve Los Cabos and Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos has pushed back to 2017.

Solaz, a Starwood Luxury Collection Resort, is on schedule for the 2017 opening of their luxury property along the Los Cabos corridor. The resort will feature contemporary architecture and design, a spa, a private beach club, and residences for the option to own.

Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos is still on schedule for completion in late 2017. The all-inclusive hotel  will feature 600 rooms, six restaurants, a signature Hard Rock Rock Spa, and multiple swimming pools in the Diamante area.

Montage Los Cabos is hoping to stay on schedule with a 2017 opening, but are tentative to push it back to 2018. The first Montage property located outside of the United States, the beachfront resort will be located a swimmable beach in Los Cabos, on the  shores of Santa Maria Bay and feature 122 expansive guestrooms and suites, along with 52 Montage Residences across 39-acres.

Still expected to open in 2017 is the first Mexican property by chef-hotelier Nobu Matsuhisa, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos.  The resort will feature 200 rooms with a Japanese-influenced design and a signature restaurant.

 

Colonial Mexico, Puebla

With a pushed back open date from 2016 to 2017, Rosewood Puebla is expected to open in the spring. Offering just under 80 guestrooms, the hotel will feature picturesque courtyards and stunning views of Mexico’s volcano belt from the rooftop bar and swimming pool.

 

Puerto Vallarta – Riviera Nayarit

While 2015 and 2016 was an exciting year for new hotels and attractions in Vallarta-Nayarit, 2017 is expected to be quiet as they prepare busily for an exciting 2018.  Fairmont Costa Canuva is expected to open in late 2018 in the new master-planned Costa Canuva community which will feature the first golf course jointly designed by Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa, cycling tracks, and a canopy park with ziplines.  The Park by Cirque du Soleil and Grupo Vidanta is also planning to open in 2018, revealing the first phase of the 300-acre immersive theme park.

The Costalegre, the coastal corridor of bays, coves and beaches between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, is also in the news. AMResorts will open the 120-suite Zoëtry Chamela Costalegre Mexico there in 2018. Also in the works is One&Only Santa Maria de Xala. The 75-villa hacienda resort is part of a 2,950-acre development and will have five miles of beachfront.

2018 and Beyond

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will open their fifth luxury resort in Mexico in 2019, Rosewood Mandarinas, which will be part of the exclusive La Mandarina development in Riviera Nayarit

One&Only will open their second luxury resort in Mexico in late 2018, One&Only Mandarina in the Riviera Nayarit and will feature 125 villas set over 30 hectares.

Mexico City will begin their two year reign as World Design Capital in 2018,  the first city from the Americas to receive such a title.

The Kanai Resort in Riviera Maya, calling for four luxury properties  — Auberge, W Retreat, St. Regis, and Park Hyatt — are moving their plans forward. The 136-room St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya and 180-room Starwood W Kanai Retreat have each announced a January 1, 2018, opening date.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts will open a luxury resort and private residences on the pristine beaches of Baja’s eastern shore.  With planning in place for a 2018 opening, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas will be part of the exclusive Costa Palmas resort community.
