Discovering the Sea of Cortez – Hidden Beaches, Whales, and Whale Sharks

This fully customizable itinerary is the perfect starting point for ideas on how to explore Baja California Sur and the Sea of Cortez. With a base in La Paz, travelers can experience unique encounter with wildlife, including whale sharks, migratory birds, sea turtles, sea lions, and gray whales. We encourage our travelers to not only experience the Sea of Cortez, but also learn about the magnificent flora and fauna, both land and sea, by interacting with researches, scientists, and expert guides. Day 1: Arrival to La Paz

Welcome to Mexico! Your private driver will meet you at the La Paz International Airport and you will be driven to your hotel.

Day 2: Private Whale Shark Researcher for a Day & Beach Picnic

The largest fish on the planet, the gentle whale sharks gather yearly to the coast just off La Paz. Join  Mexico’s top researchers and scientists working to understand and protect these magnificent creatures.

After boarding the research vessel, the team will brief you on protocols, and then you will begin searching for whale sharks. Throughout the day you will learn about the various projects including photo-identification, population analysis, satellite tagging and genetic analysis. There will also be time to  snorkel with these amazing giants. Snack time will be on a beautiful pristine beach on the Sea of Cortes.

Day 3: Private Day Trip Sierra la Laguna Biosphere

Looming up above the desert, the lush Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve provides the perfect escape from the bustle. Your local naturalist guide will meet you and en route to the Sierra you will learn about the natural history of the region and the ranchero culture that has kept alive centuries old artisanal traditions. Spend the day hiking the nature trails, swimming in the freshwater springs, and getting a look at local ranchero life. You will be back in your hotel for dinner with photos and amazing memories to share.

Day 4: Private Whale Watching Adventure to Bahia Madgalena with Overnight

Meet your guide and take off to Bahía Magdalena for an overnight adventure. You’ll be headed to  the jewel of the Your guide will meet you at your hotel early in the morning with snacks and coffee. We’ll have breakfast at one of our favourite ranchos en route to Magdalena Bay, jewel of the Pacific and home to a staggering number of migratory and marine birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals including the migratory gray whales. Along the way learn some of the natural history of the region and arriving to Puerto López Mateos we will board the skiff and head out into the bay in search of whales. Your naturalist guide will share their knowledge of these magnificent creatures and story of their incredible yearly migration. Enjoy a sundowner in the dunes overlooking the Pacific before returning to Puerto López Mateos to relax in your hotel, before dining on fresh, local seafood.

Day 5: Private Whale Watching Adventure to Puerto San Carlos and Back To La Paz

After a good night’s rest get up early and watch Magdalena Bay come to life and you will see why it is known as the jewel of the Pacific. After a hot breakfast we will head out on the water in search again for gray whales. We will then head south by boat through the mangrove canals, taking in the incredible scenery, and wildlife and stopping along the way at a secluded beach on Magdalena Island for a picnic lunch and a hike up the sand dunes. Arriving at Puerto San Carlos we will board the van and head back to La Paz, full of amazing memories from Magdalena Bay!

Day 6: Private Day Trip Espíritu Santo Island

Today you will discover the Sea of Cortez and Isla Espiritu Santo! The day starts with a 1.5 hour panga ride to Espiritu Santo Island; the first stop is the sea lion colony where you’ll have time to swim, snorkel and interact with the playful sea lions. Climb back on board to navigate around the island in search of hidden, virgin beaches for a picnic lunch and refreshing drink. On the beach, guides will give a talk about the natural history of the island, plants and mangroves, and you’ll be able to ask all the questions you like. Kayak around the bay, relax, or take a nature hike before happy hour and heading back to shore.

Day 7: Departure from La Paz

Today you will be privately transferred to La Paz airport for your onward flight home.


This trip can be customized for a private journey in the months of February and March.
