Discover Baja and the Copper Canyon



This trip combines the discovery of Baja Califonia Sur with the adventures of the Copper Canyon region, perfect for active and curious travelers.

This adventurous trip is designed for those who wish to enjoy a number of different activities during their visit to Mexico. It runs for 17 days, and travelers will enjoy amazing hiking in the Copper Canyon; a spectacular train journey through the mountains; trips into the pristine Pacific whale lagoons for opportunities to see, photograph, and even touch friendly Gray whales; and a unique kayak trip through a incredible wilderness area in the Sea of Cortez. This trip is a classic adventure taking in three different areas of Northern Mexico. It is ideal for active travelers wanting to combine remote hiking and paddling in unforgettable wilderness settings and amazing wildlife viewing opportunities with visits to local villages and towns very much off the beaten path.

This fantastic adventure combines the Baja Multisport and Copper Canyon Hiking Tours and can be scheduled to include time with Gray Whales in their annual migrations to Magdalena Bay or Holy Week in the Tarahumara high Country.



Isla Espiritu Santo – Kayak the Sea of Cortez for a peaceful journey around this beautiful island and stop off to camp for a few days while you swim and snorkel with a sea lion colony

La Paz – Visit this picturesque seaside town and watch the sunset on the famous promenade

Pacific Lagoons at Lopez Mateos – Visit the amazing breeding grounds of the Pacific Gray Whales during their annual migration here and enjoy a few boat trips into the lagoons getting a chance for an arm’s length encounter with these giant whales.

El Fuerte – Wander this historic Magical Town and roam the cobble stone streets for a taste of old Mexico

Sierra Madre Mountains – Take a journey on the  Chihuahua al Pacifico train, travel over bridges, through tunnels and enjoy the breathtaking views and scenery

Copper Canyon – Hike the rugged and wild  Copper Canyon region with visits to  remote indigenous family compounds perched on canyon walls

Cerocahui and Creel – Visit the Cerocahui Mission and some of the most impressive view points along the road from Cerocahui to Creel

Day 1: Arrival to La Paz

Check into your hotel room and at 9.00pm meet your guides for a trip briefing. (

Day 2: Isla Espiritu Santo

Transfer to Espiritu Santo Island in our high speed motor boat. Guides will discuss points on safety and provide beginners with the basics of sea-kayaking and correct use of gear and kayaks. In the afternoon, we embark on our first paddle beneath spectacular volcanic cliffs and arrive at the first of many beautiful beaches to set up camp.

Day 3: Isla Espiritu Santo

Continue in our kayaks exploring a new section of coastline with small off shore islands where numerous sea birds nest. Tonight we will camp on a new beach.

Day 4: Isla Espiritu Santo

Today, we continue our voyage to the end of the island to our final camping beach. In the afternoon, we will hike to the other side of the island to check out the spectacular lagoons and landscape of this World Heritage site.

Day 5: Espiritu Santo and La Paz

Today we take a fast motor boat ride to a beautiful off shore island which is home to a large sea lion colony. Experience the amazing thrill of swimming with sea lion pups and snorkel amongst thousands of tropical fish. Return to your hotel in La Paz for a relaxing night on your own.

Day 6: La Paz

A ‘day off’ to enjoy a leisurely stroll around our picturesque seaside town. Browse in many Mexican arts and crafts shops or if you would rather a more active day we’ll set you up with a mountain bike, or a day fishing or wind-surfing. A margarita at sunset on the famous sea promenade is a La Paz tradition!

Day 7: La Paz and Lopez Mateos

Today, we transfer in our air conditioned private van to the shores of the Pacific Lagoons at Lopez Mateos – considered to be the finest whale-watching area in the La Paz proximity (transfer time is 3.5 hours). Typically within minutes of clambering aboard our motor skiffs we are out in the bay surrounded by Whales. The spectacle is quite amazing and close up encounters are practically guaranteed. Returning to the shore it is then just a two minute stroll to our accommodation. Relax and then freshen up before dining in our Palapa Restaurant with a buffet of fresh sea food.

Day 8: Lopez Mateos and La Paz

Arise to a Mexican cooked breakfast before our second whale-watching trip. We will venture out into the bay for a second opportunity to immerse our selves amongst the whales. For the last ten years many of our guests have been thrilled by the whales swimming right alongside our boats giving them the extraordinary opportunity to pet them. We will return to Lopez Mateos for a delicious lunch and then transfer back to La Paz arriving at around 4.00pm.

Day 9: Los Mochis to El Fuerte

Relax in the morning and then after lunch, prepare your belongings for the ferry across the Sea of Cortez. You head to the ferry around noon to board the boat and stow your baggage ready for the 3:00 pm departure. Once you arrive into Los Mochis (Topalobampo Port) you will be transferred to the charming colonial gateway to the Copper Canyon, El Fuerte. Check in to our beautiful historic lodge and then roam the cobble stone streets for a taste of old Mexico. Relax and wander this quaint and historical city. Day 10: El Fuerte to Guitayvo

All aboard the world famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train trip into the Sierra Madre Mountains. This comfortable first class train leads us through dozens of tunnels and over countless bridges with exceptional opportunities for taking pictures or just enjoying the view. We get off the train in San Rafael (6,600 ft.). We load up the vehicle and set out driving through the rolling hills of the high sierra. We come to a school and a church in the indigenous village of San Alonso and follow the rolling hills of the high Sierra Tarahumara. After about an hour, we arrive to Guitayvo (7,590 ft.) in the late-afternoon. We arrive to the community eco-cabins in Guitayvo where we set off on a light hike to an impressive view point to stretch the legs and acclimatize to the crisp high sierra air. We will spend our first night in this simple yet charming shelter. Short hike- 1 hour. Altitude gain/loss: 150/80 ft.

Day 11: Copper Canyon Trek Day One

Today we will begin our hiking adventure. We continue navigating around the mesa of Guitayvo and we drop down through an arroyo (river bed) and then we climb gradually up the side of a canyon. The mystical tranquility of this alpine region is reinforced by the wind whistling through the pine needles. We arrive to the small ranch of Huemachi (7,620 ft.) in the late aftrernoon.  Full day hike- 6 to 8 hours. Altitude gain/loss: 690/1650 ft.

Day 12: Copper Canyon Trek Day Two

Today our descent continues as we connect with the Urique Canyon. Our trail affords us stupendous views and we really hit our stride as we walk along the ridge that spills down into the incredible Copper Canyon. We arrive to the small ranch of Chiruhuerabo (7,720 ft.) in the late aftrernoon.  Full day hike- 6 to 8 hours. Altitude gain/loss: 1320/142 ft.

Day 13: Copper Canyon Trek Day Three

We now enter the Urique canyon proper through a side canyon. The views from the ridge looking down are spectacular and we carefully navigate the steep descent with plenty of stops to observe the quickly changing vegetation. We make our way towards Naranjo (3,894 ft.), where we are greeted by the friendly people that live there. After a coffee and some time to chat with the locals, we make our camp in the fruit orchards of this charming spot. Amazing views from our tents in all directions.  Full day hike – 6 to 8 hours. Altitude gain/loss: 132/3,826 ft.

Day 14: Copper Canyon Trek Day Four

Our last hiking day is shorter as we continue our descent feeling the final change in climate and vegetation as we arrive down to the Urique River. We continue on to the frontier mining outpost of Uriqe (1,818 ft.), where a home cooked meal awaits with Doña Tita. In the afternoon, we will climb out of the town of Urique by vehicle up impressive switchback road to the high sierra and our own private lodge at Cerocahui where our clean clothes and a hot fire are waiting for us!  Full Day hike- 4 to 6 hours.  Altitude gain/loss: 258/2,376 ft.

Day 15: Cerocahui and Creel

After breakfast we will to our destination at Creel by road stopping to see the Cerocahui Mission, and some of the most impressive view points along the road from Cerocahui to Creel. You will eat lunch along the way before arriving to the frontier logging outpost turned tourist center for the Copper Canyon, Creel. Diner in our cozy hotel.

Day 16: Creel to Chihuahua

Breakfast and a chance for to explore a bit more before our mid-morning transfer to Chihuahua where we will check into our comfortable accommodation. The late afternoon is free for relaxing or site seeing at the interesting museums and historical sites of this important cultural and economic center of Northwestern Mexico. Night on the town for our farewell fiesta.

Day 17: Departure, Chihuahua Mexico/Home.

Transfer to Airport for onward flights.
