This Copper Canyon family trip is nowhere near your typical family vacation. It’s a real adventure into Mexico’s ancient lands to see its incredible natural beauty and meet the region’s indigenous people.

You and your family will discover remote Tarahumara villages, tour mining towns, and visit colonial cities. You’ll board the famous El Chepe train and journey into the Sierra Madre mountains. Thanks to the time of year, you’ll also witness the traditions and processions that mark the holy week of Semana Santa.

Day 1: Arrival to Los Mochis and El Fuerte

Transfer from Los Mochis International Airport to El Fuerte, the charming colonial gateway to the Copper Canyon. Check in to your beautiful historic lodge and then roam the cobblestone streets for a taste of old Mexico. Take your time to relax and wander this quaint town that was given Pueblo Magico status by the Mexican government.

Day 2: Take the Chihuahua al Pacífico Train to Bahuichivo

All aboard the world famous Chihuahua al Pacífico train, nicknamed El Chepe, and head into the Sierra Madre mountains. This comfortable first class train leads you through dozens of tunnels and over countless bridges with exceptional opportunities for taking pictures or just enjoying the view. Arrive in the early afternoon to Bahuichivo, where there will be time to walk around and enjoy the countryside. A Mexican dinner awaits in the evening.

Day 3: Hike Cerro del Gallego

After breakfast, take the chance to explore and enjoy the rugged canyon terrain with a private tour to Cerro del Gallego. Stop off at the mirador (lookout point) for a fantastic view of the Copper Canyon.

Day 4: Bahuichivo and Creel

Back onto the train to journey to Creel, the frontier logging and mining town turned tourism center of the Copper Canyon. An afternoon arrival will give you time to wander the many gift shops; make sure to buy directly from the Tarahumara indigenous people who are usually selling their crafts on the central plaza. Alternately, the crafts cooperative contributes to the local communities.

Day 5: Visit Lake Arareco and the Valley of the Monks

After a hearty breakfast and hotel check out, meet your guide to explore Lake Arareco and the Valley of the Monks. This lovely U-shaped body of water is surrounded by fragrant pine trees, making it the perfect place to stop with your family and reconnect with nature. Then, head to the Valley of the Monks, an unusual rock formation jutting out of the ground.

After, settle into your lovely hotel and admire amazing views over the canyon. The late afternoon and evening are free to spend some time with the family relaxing or exploring the nearby canyon terrain.

Day 6: Discover Semana Santa activities with the local community

Witness the traditions of Semana Santa, Mexico’s holy week, with a tour into the local community. You’ll see the traditional dances and processions that have become a hallmark of the celebrations in this part of the world.

After, heighten your cultural immersion with a stay in the community lodgings of the Norogachi people.

Day 7: Head to Hotel Mirador

After breakfast and a chance to explore, say goodbye to your new friends and enjoy a private transfer through the rolling hills of the high sierra to Hotel Mirador, stopping en route at some impressive vantage points. The late afternoon is free for relaxing before enjoying a lovely dinner on the property.

Day 8: Cable car ride, zip lining, and views over the Copper Canyon

After breakfast, meet your expert guide to learn more about the canyon and enjoy amazing views of Otero Canyon and Fertility Rock. Later on, cross the canyon in a spectacular cable car ride (one of the highest in the world) to a breathtaking viewpoint where you can marvel at three of the main canyons, including the Copper Canyon itself. You may also experience a fantastic zip line excursion, with spectacular vistas of the canyon, and other optional activities.

Day 9: Head back to El Fuerte

Start the day with breakfast before heading out for exploration on foot and a spot of souvenir shopping among the local crafts vendors. Then, back onto the train for a ride to El Fuerte. Check into your cozy lodgings before going into town for a final exploration.

 

Day 10: Departure day

Transfer from El Fuerte to Los Mochis International Airport for your flight home.
