Day 3: XOCHIMILCO CHINAMPAS & FRIDA KAHLO’S ARTISTIC LEGACY

Xochimilco Chinampas Experience & Frida Kahlo´ s Casa Azul
Discover the ancient chinampas of Xochimilco and visit Frida Kahlo´s beloved home in the south of Mexico City.
On a 3.5 hour visit, take a traditional “trajinera” a gondola-like boat, manually steered by a local rower (40 mins) through the Xochimilco canals to arrive at one of Mexico City´s last surviving ¨chinampas¨. These small plots of land are built up from the canal beds and used to grow crops, a sustainable technique that dates back to Mesoamerican times. Discover the importance of this agricultural heritage system as you explore with a member of the local chinampa project. Learn about agroecology and how millions of species shape ecosystems as you observe an array of vegetables, flowers, and herbs.
Enjoy a tasty lunch at the chinampa, sampling dishes like fresh quesadillas with huitlacoche (corn mushroom) and pumpkin flowers, as well as pork shawl gorditas, tlacoyos and chinampa salad. Spend a couple of hours inside the creative world of Frida Kahlo at her beloved home, Casa Azul, for a fascinating insight into how the painter worked and lived. Enjoy a 5-hour Mexican cooking experience designed by celebrated TV chef, Graciela Montaño. Arriving to the private cooking studio, sip on agua fresca and coffee as you get a brief introduction to Mexican cuisine from Graciela or a member of her close-knit team, before heading to Mercado de Medellin, a bustling indoor market of fresh vegetables and classic Mexican ingredients. Return back to the cooking studio to begin your delightful hands-on cooking experience. Follow your expert as they guide you in creating four-courses of traditional Mexican cuisine with exciting twists thrown in. Once finished, gather round the dinner table to enjoy your efforts and to sample an extra special selection of Mexican spirits, including mezcals, sotol, and bacanora.
