Five destinations that reveal the other Mexico – ancient, alive, and entirely absorbing.
Everyone knows Mexico has world-class beaches. What surprises our travelers – again and again – is how much more there is. Markets fragrant with mole and mezcal. Colonial cities painted in every color. Lagoons so blue they feel like a dream. This is the Mexico we live for.
01: San Miguel de Allende
Central Highlands · Cobblestone Charm
Call it a small town with a big, artistic personality. San Miguel’s cobblestone streets and candy-colored facades have made it one of the world’s most photographed cities – but the real magic is what happens when you slow down and look closer. Artist studios tucked behind iron gates. A rooftop aperitivo with views over the Parroquia at golden hour. A private tequila tasting at Casa Dragones where the spirit becomes a story.
It’s also one of the most family-friendly cities in Mexico – wide plazas, walkable neighborhoods, and a pace that invites children to explore what’s behind those big historic doors. Families we’ve brought here consistently tell us San Miguel was the unexpected highlight of their trip.
Highlights:
- Hot air balloon at sunrise
- Casa Dragones tequila tasting
- Cuna de Tierra vineyard lunch
- Art galleries and studios
- Family Cooking Session
“Zach and his team really know the best spots in Mexico. They were there with ideas and support throughout. Fantastic and super responsive.”

Insider Tip: To skip the Mexico City connection, Guanajuato Airport (BJX) is just a 90- minute drive away from San Miguel de Allende with direct flights from California, Chicago, and Texas.
02: Mexico City
CDMX · The Magnetic Capital
There is no city in the Americas quite like it. Diverse, culture-rich neighborhoods. The legendary Anthropology Museum. The ancient floating gardens of Xochimilco. Off-hours access to Templo Mayor, where Aztec relics found below the historic center belong to you and your guide alone. And a food scene that has made international chefs reroute entire press tours just to eat here.
We love building Mexico City itineraries for families – an after-hours visit to the Anthropology Museum is like a secret world for kids, and a morning cruising Xochimilco’s millenary canals to play and eat at a chinampa garden is the kind of adventure that gets retold at dinner for years. One of our favorite new activities: Journey’s signature taco experience, exploring the craft, culture and flavors behind one of Mexico’s most iconic dishes – young travelers love blending their own salsas.
Highlights:
- Anthropology Museum after public hours
- Teotihuacán Pyramids by hot air balloon
- Xochimilco’s ancient “floating gardens” by boat
- Journey’s signature taco experience
- Private access at Templo Mayor
Earth Month Pick · April
Journey Mexico is B-Corp Certified, designing luxury travel with a lasting impact. Where possible, our Mexico City itineraries include a visit to the chinampas – a 2,000-year-old sustainable agricultural system that is a living link between the Aztec civilization and the modern-day capital.
03: Oaxaca
Southern Mexico · Cultural Heartland
If you’ve never had a mole made the way it was intended – layered, complex, hours in the making – Oaxaca is where that changes. This southern state is Mexico’s cultural heartland: home to the Zapotec legacy, to mezcal, to hand-woven textiles with patterns unchanged for centuries. The state capital is walkable, spirited, and endlessly interesting. Monte Albán, the ancient Zapotec city above the valley, is a UNESCO site that earns every superlative.
A private cooking class here is a door into a way of life, where visitors feel more like special guests than tourists. Browse the market with a local cook, then spend the morning learning to prepare mouthwatering dishes that have been passed through generations. Leave with a recipe, a story, and a craving you’ll spend years trying to recreate at home.
Highlights:
- Private mole cooking class
- Monte Albán archaeological site
- Mezcal distillery visit and tasting
- Artisan markets and craft villages
- “Alebrije” painting workshop
“The staff were absolute perfection. The food, the cocktails – they made our stay so personal. The group is already looking forward to booking with Journey Mexico again.”

04: Mérida & the Yucatán
Tropical Peninsula · Maya Identity
Mérida is the Yucatán’s elegant capital – a city of Spanish colonial mansions built during the henequin boom, brilliant white limestone, and a unique flavor profile that reflects the region’s mixed heritage. It’s also the perfect base for some of Mexico’s greatest road trips: curated exploration routes through the Yucatán Peninsula that take in ancient Maya ruins, pink flamingo lagoons, and “cenote” swimming holes that feel straight out of an Avatar movie.
For families, this region is especially rewarding. Maya history and cosmology come alive through scavenger hunts at Uxmal and spotting constellations through a telescope at Ek Balam after public hours. And the cenotes, like natural playgrounds formed over millennia, where children’s delight is contagious.
- Uxmal family scavenger hunt
- Swimming and snorkeling at a private cenote
- Flamingo lagoons at Celestún
- Stargazing at Ek Balam
- Traditional ice cream in Mérida
Featured Experience
The Paravero Catamaran, Caribbean Coast
From the Yucatán, it’s an easy extension to Mexico’s Caribbean shores – and once you’re there, we’ll put you on the Paravero catamaran for a day that drifts between coral reefs, turquoise shallows, and a lunch served somewhere between sky and sea. The Riviera Maya doesn’t have to mean a crowded resort. It can mean this.
“We worked with Journey Mexico on our recent trip to Mérida. For a family of five – including three children – it’s often hard to find something for everyone. Everyone was phenomenal.”
— Steven C., Journey Mexico Traveler
05: Bacalar
Southern Quintana Roo · Tranquil Lake Paradise
There is a lagoon in the far south of Mexico that locals call the “Lake of Seven Colors” – and the name, for once, is not hyperbole. Bacalar’s shallow freshwater lagoon shifts from pale jade to deep sapphire depending on the light, the depth, the hour. It is one of the most beautiful places in the Americas, and it remains genuinely unhurried.
In contrast to the resort strip to the north, Bacalar rewards travelers who want intimate boutique properties, kayak mornings, and the feeling of having discovered something rather than followed a crowd. It also sits just south of the Yucatán circuit – pair it with Mérida and you have a week that covers a sweep of Mexico that most visitors never find.
Highlights:
- Lagoon kayaking at sunrise
- Bacalar town’s fort and pirate history
- Uninterrupted lagoon views
- Boutique waterfront stays
- Day trip to nearby ruins hidden in the jungle
Bacalar is a reminder that Mexico’s Caribbean coastline doesn’t begin and end at the resort corridor. The road less traveled is full of surprises.
