Fine Arts

While most have heard of Mexico’s beloved Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, there are many internationally acclaimed artists from Mexico that draw art buffs to the museums and galleries housed through out the country every year.  From the national museums in the capital to smaller galleries through out the country, Mexico is home to world-class painters, sculptors and artists working in many other mediums.  The inspired works of contemporary artists such as Leonora Carrington, Miguel Ángel Alamilla, and José Luis Cuevas, to name just a few, have solidified Mexico’s place as a leader in the international art community.  Whether your interest is visiting the large exhibits of Mexico City, gallery hopping on the cobblestone streets of San Miguel de Allende or Puerto Vallarta, or trying your hand at an art school on one of the many artist run institutes around the country, Mexico’s fine arts rival the European cultural centers for quality and style.

Mexico is home to many astounding murals, and below you will find a video of two Journey Mexico guides explaining how crucial aspects of Mexico’s history and culture are represented in the nation’s art, such as these murals in the City Hall building in Merida.
