Desert

The image of a lone Mexican cowboy sleeping against a cactus is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Mexico.  What you may not know about the Mexican desert is that in addition to cacti and cowboys, this vast part of our geography is home to some of Mexico’s most spectacular plants and animals.  Close to 500 species of plants, 4 amphibians, 43 reptiles, around 200 birds, and over 50 mammals have adapted to difficult ecological conditions.  Another surprise - Mexico’s finest wines (which rival those of California, France and Australia) come from the Baja Peninsula desert region.  Deliciously dry and stunningly stark, Mexico’s desert is an unexpected jewel.
