ABOUT ADVENTURE TRAVEL IN MEXICO

About four times the size of its Spanish Conquerors' homeland, Mexico has thousands of miles of Atlantic, Pacific and Caribbean coastline. Snow-capped volcanoes and mountain ranges, vast deserts, immense canyons, jungles and tropical forests are only a few of Mexico's diverse geographic features and ecosystems. Complimenting these natural wonders are fascinating pre-Columbian ruins, world-renowned cuisine and music, as well as warm and passionate people that bring smiles to even the most seasoned travelers. Without a doubt, Mexico has something for everyone, and adventure travel mexico is certainly a world-class destination for the adventure traveler.

Adventure Travel Mexico Destinations

Journey Mexico features trips into throughout the diverse areas of Mexico including:

  • The Copper Canyon: the largest canyon system in the world (4X the volume of the Grand Canyon)
  • Baja California: Rugged and remote coastline meets desert wildlife
  • Oaxaca: Travel from the vibrant and lively Oaxaca Valley and Sierra Madre del Sur down to the lush, tropical Oaxacan coast.
  • Yucatan Peninsula: Ancient Mayan Ruins, Dazzling Caribbean Coast, Mysterious underground caverns and rivers
  • Chiapas and the Mundo Maya:  Expore the lesser visitied parts of Mexico in this lush state famous for its culture, natural beauty and history

Each destination features spectacular natural wonders, villages filled with artisans at work, colorful markets, and traditions that remain largely unchanged over centuries.

The Copper Canyon is much larger and expansive than its more popular and much visited northern cousin-the Grand Canyon. This vast network of gullies, gorges and canyons in Mexico's northwestern Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains, includes over 19 named canyons and is home to thousands of Tarahumara (Raramuri) Indians and ranchers scattered amongst picturesque villages, rivers and pine forests. Just a short distance south of the U.S. border, the Copper Canyon is still surprisingly untouched by the modern world.

Baja California is an arid peninsula bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the east by the Sea of Cortez. Also known as the Gulf of California, these sparkling blue waters fill the deep chasm between Baja and the rest of Mexico. These nutrient rich waters are some of the most biologically rich on the planet, and host more endemic species than any other body of water in the world. Its warm currents sweep down the east side of the peninsula, and collide with the open Pacific's cooler flow where Baja's bony fingertip pokes into the northern tropics. With old missions and mines, bays and beaches, Baja offers something for everyone.

Oaxaca to the south, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the economic, cultural, and political center of one of the most fascinating areas in Mexico. With mountains almost 10,000 feet high, caverns among the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, hidden jungles, and intriguing valleys, Oaxaca's diverse topography is unrivaled. In addition, the region is host to 16 ethnic groups including the mighty Zapotecs and Mixtecs who once ruled this region of Mexico. These vibrant cultures still maintain many of their centuries old traditions and offer the traveler incredible opportunities to look back into Mexico's colorful past.

Yucatan in the extreme south is one of the most traditional regions of the Mexican Republic.   Ancient Mayan ruins only hint at the complexity and enormity of the civilization that once flourished in the dense jungles and dazzling coasts of this tropical treasure.   Towering pyramids set both in the jungle and on the turquoise shores of the Mexican Caribbean have fascinated visitors for centuries.   Meanwhile, the magic of Mexico's Caribbean Coast provides ample opportunity for snorkeling, scuba-diving, swimming and relaxing.   The crystalline rivers and caverns that dot the peninsula add a special mystery and offer opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Natural Beauty

Flora: Mexico bridges temperate and tropical regions and thus has an enormous range of natural environments and vegetation zones. Its vast deserts and rugged mountain ranges provide a myriad of microclimates, which host an incredible diversity of plants and animals. Most of the world's cacti can be found throughout the Mexican deserts, while the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental support a steamy tropical rainforest full of tropical hardwoods, ferns, epiphytes and palms. The plateaus of the north and central highlands still have large stands of pine and oak forest in an alpine setting.

Fauna: Mexico's diverse climate and vegetation are host to an equally impressive array of animal life. With whales, seat turtles, dolphins, and seabirds on the coasts; puma, mountain lion, deer, condors, eagles, and falcons in the mountains; and monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, tapirs, and colorful tropical birds in the jungles; there is something for all nature lovers to appreciate in Mexico.

Highlights for wildlife viewing include:

  • Gray and Blue Whales of Baja California
  • 6 species of Sea Turtles throughout Mexico's Pacific coasts (especially Baja California and Oaxacan coasts)
  • Dolphins all along Mexico's Pacific coast
  • Colorful Tropical Reef Fish on the coral reefs and of Mexico's Pacific and Caribbean coasts
  • Over 1000 Bird species throughout Mexico (Baja California and The Copper Canyon are world famous birding areas)
  • Sea Lions and Elephant Seals of Baja California
