The museum is named the Soumaya Museum after Slim’s late wife, Soumaya Slim Domit, and houses more than 60,000 pieces. The 16 exhibits are comprised from Slim’s private collection (the largest private collection in both Mexico and Latin America) and feature pieces by Salvador Dali, Cezanne, Renoir, Rodin, Matisse, Leonardo Da Vinci, Diego Rivera, and others. In addition to sculptures and paintings, the collection includes historical documents of Hernan Cortes and Christopher Columbus as well as prehispanic pieces from different Mesoamerican cultures. The museum also features a workshop area, shops, a restaurant, and an auditorium for 350 people.

The Carlos Slim Foundation’s collection has become one of the most important private collections in the world, representing the great European masters, the artists of New Spain, and national (Mexican) treasures of varied centuries. Spanning 17 thousand square meters with an exhibition area of six thousand meters distributed over six floors, the Soumaya Museum is sure to attract art lovers worldwide. According to Slim, however, the aim of the museum is to increase “human development” in Mexico, which is why admission is free. The museum is to open for the public on March 28th with operating hours of 10:30am to 7:30pm.

Mexico City Testimonial

Mexico-City-TestimonialThe following is a testimonial from Joseph Gandolfo of The Travel Center/AMEX

Descending into the Mexico City airport, you immediately get the feeling this is going to be a nightmare to navigate. The urban sprawl can be seen in all directions, with even the surrounding mountains seemingly unable to contain it. Fortunately as we arrived and exited passport control and customs, Matteo [Luthi] from Journey Mexico was there to greet us, and to put us at ease.

From that moment we were in great hands, all those connected with Journeys Mexico; the drivers, guides, those who planned our itinerary behind the scenes, all were professional, informative and friendly.

This being my very first visit to Mexico City, I was astounded at all it has to offer. This is a city with European sensibilities, yet with a definite pounding Latino heart under its skin. We were guided through a maze of streets, some bustling with vendors and shoppers as colorful as any outdoor casbah, then drove down elegant boulevards lined with brownstones, villas, restaurants, bars and sophisticated boutiques whose familiar names adorn storefronts in all modern metropolitan cities. This is the ZOCALO, or the cultural heart of the city, also a U.N. designated World Heritage site (1987).

We visited the main square, the Frida Kahlo Museum, the Cathedral and had only scratched the surface.

The Anthropology Museum was a highlight of the city tour as it continued the following day. We were all in awe of the incredible beauty of the displayed artifacts and all agreed we could have spent an entire day learning about the Mayas and Aztecs as well as the other lesser known civilizations that occupied this geographical location throughout the centuries.

Perhaps the most impressive site of all is located about 30 miles to the northeast: the staggering pyramids and ancient abandoned metropolis of Teotihuacan. The long, wide Avenue of the Dead, and the monolithic Pyramid of the Sun as well as the Pyramid of the Moon rise to the sky leaving you to imagine what a glorious civilization this must have been.

Without our guides and the help of Journey Mexico we would never had be able to see so much and cover so much ground as efficiently as we did in such a short time. The MAPTA group is thankful and appreciative for all their help.

Ancient Tunnel Found Under Mexican Pyramid

Teotihuacan temples

Teotihuacan

Fans of archeological travel will be excited to learn that scientists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have recently located an ancient tunnel that leads to several sealed chambers below the Temple of the Feathered Serpent at Teotihuacan in Mexico City.

These chambers are located approximately 12 meters below the Temple of the Feathered Serpent and were sealed 1,800 years ago by the inhabitants of Teotihuacan themselves. Archeologists believe (and hope) the chambers contain the tombs of the ancient rulers of Teotihuacan, sacred sites that archeologists have not yet been able to locate.

Scientists working on the site hope to excavate the tunnel under the Temple of the Feathered Serpent and breech its underlying chambers within the next three months. More information about these developments can be found at eTurboNews.

Teotihuacan has long been a staple of Journey Mexico trips to Mexico City, and this recent development in the mystery of what lies beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent is just the latest example of how Mexico continues to offer opportunities to literally discover fresh pieces of history. Zoot Suit Playing in Mexico City

Luxury travel enthusiasts traveling to Mexico City should enjoy this year’s production of Zoot Suit, which premiered this week and will run through July 4th. This production of Luis Valdez’s classic musical marks the first time Zoot Suit has ever been put on, in full scale, in Spanish.

Zoot Suit originally premiered in Los Angeles in 1978 and, due to its smashing success, went on to play on Broadway in 1981. This year, the The National Theater Company and the Theater at The National University of Mexico are putting the musical on in the university’s cultural center, the Teatro Juan Ruiz de Alarcon.

This important piece of Chicano theater should be very well received as Luis Valdez moved to Mexico months ago to cast and direct the play himself.

Bike Share Program Happening in Mexico City

If you want to stay Green while traveling to Mexico City, take advantage of the city’s new bike share program, Ecobici. Although the abundance of cobblestone streets doesn’t exactly facilitate bicycle riding, the three-month-old program seems to be flourishing.

Earlier this spring, Mexico City installed 85 Ecobici stations with a total of 1,100 bicycles that are available for rent in half-hour increments. A membership card for the program, which you swipe at the stations to release a bike, cost $24 dollars per month.

So far, Ecobici has 4,000 members who have taken 50,000 bike rides with zero accidents and zero acts of theft. City officials hope to see the number of memberships reach 24,000 by the end of the year. Below is a video from Ecobici’s website.
