Very helpful advice. We are planning our first 2 week trip to the Yucatan in March.
Can this trip be done easily by bus?
I am reading lots of conflicting advice about whether renting a car is a good idea or not.

Matteo recently did this trip driving with his family. He recommends that if you do rent a car, rent it through a good rental company like Avis, Hertz, etc. Be sure that the car has new tires and is in good conditions (it’s worth it to spend a little more for a newer rental). The roads are good, so you don’t need a 4×4.

Be sure you have a good Atlas. Matteo recommends Guia Roji (www.guiaroji.com.mx). Also be sure to have cash (pesos) with you as many areas of the Yucatan do not accept credit cards.

If you are well traveled and up for the normal challenges that come with driving in a foreign area, renting a car gives you much more flexibility than trying to schedule buses (we’re not even sure if there are buses to Escarcega and Calakmul).
